I use both side by side and a pump pretty often I would have to say though that the side by side wins.

I've tried most back in 1950's when Pheasants were plentiful. Started with a single shot 12 ga (don't remember brand), then an H&R bolt-action 12 ga (gad, that was a heavy gun), a Chicago Arms 16 ga pump (my favorite), a Mossberg 16 ga bolt-action model 190 w/select-a-choke (not the best choice), and then a 20 ga S/S (don't remember brand). Now its my Mossberg 500 12 ga pump, of which I marked for the survey.

I use a semi auto mostly.. Softer shooting than a pump or SXS/O-U,,, and after a long afternoon in a dove field,, the sholder will thank you

You shouldn't have to fire enough rounds to get a sore shoulder
