My Model 11
I have a 1908 Remington Model 11 (12 Gauge). I have it apart for cleaning, replacement of broken parts, and re-finishing the stock.
I personally do not advise (except in rare occasions) forcing anything mechanical. The bolt in my Model 11 mechanically locks in the open position also. I don't know how yet but I think I know why.
When the bolt and barrel move to the rear together, the barrel then needs to move forward leaving the bolt behind so a shell can be chambered. Think about it. If the barrel and bolt moved forward together, how would a shell be chambered?
