Nazi's first action was collecting guns, and shooting, burning, whatever, people they didn't like, had something they wanted, like money, or disagreed with them. Once no defense is present, the government used groups they supported to preform illegal acts against citizens. Hitler youth, etc.
Finally, they came out of the closet, and owned the country.
The sad part is the Isreali Jews, realize the importance of everyone being able to defend themselves from an outside invader, and require military service. The Swiss are even smarter, issuing government firearms to EVERYONE, for protection of the country.

In the recent past, we've had anarchy. LA, with the Rodney King riots, and the Watts riots should be a wake up call. The police, and fire department, pull out, and it's anarchy. Lawful citizens are TOTALLY helpless, because they don't have guns, while the thugs, supported by the Mexican import drug trade, are armed with AK 47's.
The rich are protected, either by their own efforts, or, by the police pulling back to their positions.
The ACLU, and the Fienstien's of this world are totally insulated from these experiences, or, they forget them quickly. Government CANNOT protect you in those situations, as a general rule. Fienstien was targeted by an anti-jewish league and her first reaction was to get a concealed carry permit in San Francisco. At the time, she had the ONLY permit in San Francisco. Guess what's good for her isn't good for the rest of us.
The kids, and parents, that live in the projects in San Francisco are threatened far worse then she every was, on a daily basis. Going to school crossing other gangs territories, is a daily threat to life and limb. Likewise living in the projects. Yet , law abiding folks in the projects have two choices: be abused by the gang in their project, or, join it. Their is no non-participation. Ms. Fienstien doesn't face this situation, yet she lives in the same city.
This is what is so horrible about the ACLU position on the Second Amendment. It's an elitest, oligarchy position, that lets the 'little people' helpless, and defenseless, in the face of gangs, and Ak-47's, or, leaves them as criminals for protecting themselves.
Our current gun laws are designed for normal conditions. Being attacked, during the anarchy of the Rodney King riots, and trying to protect your business, family, with tactics suitable to the conditions, make you a criminal in the eyes of the helicopter. I didn't see the ACLU defending the Koreans that were trying to protect their family and business by shooting guys before they had a chance to molotov cocktail their businesses.
The funniest part to me, is folks saying that we are helpless against our own government. The enforcement arm of our government are tremendously underpaid, politcally abused, and I would think, would be at the forefront to overthrow our current elitest-oligarchy.
How would you feel, going to Iraq/Iran/Afganistan, on what's little better then minimum wage, and getting abused by some Senator making 200k a year, after they approved a 20% raise for themselves, while you starve?
Last time I checked, the folks that have access to tanks, etc. are the National Guard. Another super under paid group, abused by the liberal press, and government group.
How about the police, and the nightmare of poltical correctness they have to live with, everyday?
Finally, if terrorism has shown us one thing, its that guerilla warfare is STILL effective. Sure, you maybe caught, but, if enough actions are taken, that would change.
As for needing a vulcan, etc. I'll just go back to the Japanese general, asked about trying to invade American, in WWII.

Finally, the ACLU has done what Justice Hugo Black, and Scalia were/are fearful of. Rather then a clear, literal interrpretation of the Bill of Rights, they have learned from Supreme Court justices and the Clintons, that use artifical constructs to errode the rights stated clearly in the Bill of Rights. The result is a slippery slope, that slowly limits our rights.
In Kali, it's no assault rifles, no magazines over 10 rounds, no short barrel, garbage laws that limit the avaliablilty of firearms in the state, drop tests that stop Keltecs etc. from being sold here, no .50 caliber rifles, even though they have NEVER been used in any crime in Kali, you are required to own a state approved, big brother safe, that limits your right to travel, and, makes gun ownership a right for mainly the richer of our state.
All of these are state laws, and, if the 14th Amendment is used to extend the Bill of Rights against state governments, including the Second Amendment, all these 'laws' are illegal,
not to mention the problems of getting a concealed carry permit, where in some areas, it's impossible, unless you are rich, or a politician. It would be nice if the ACLU would bother to READ the 14th Amendment, and then realize it was intended to extend the Bill of Rights, ALL of the amendments, against the states.
