Academy Sports

One tip on Academy:

They do have good prices, however; their guns have trigger locks in the display case. They'll tell you that they are not allowed to take them off. Just imagine buying a gun that you cant put your finger on the trigger. Not me!

Here's what I did when I bought one there. Tell them that you want to see a new one in the box; you want to inspect all of the contents. When they bring one out, bingo, no trigger guard installed.

They once told me that they only had the display model. I said OK, no problem, but I'm not buying it. Magically!!!!!, From out of the blue, one of the other guys behind the counter says, "let me check the computer, I think we do have a new one in the back".

Also, "generally speaking"; the superstores are not usually staffed with experts. They're usually is one on staff, but it may not be the guy you get. Make sure you've done all your research before you go.

I once had a youngster at "one of the other superstores" tell me the only difference between a Blackhawk and a GP100 was that the GP100 was stainless. I politely informed him that I've been shooting Rugers for 40 years and I knew those guns like the back of my hand; he held his ground. Seeya kid!

They do have good prices though!

wouldnt academy be a local dealer?

No more than Walmart IMO

A gun dealer deals in firearms, ammo & acessaries.....
Not a few guns here & ladies underware in the next dept
Just my 2 bits

my local academy carries 2x the # of guns a anybody else within 100 miles, and waaaaaayyyy more ammo(both variety and amount) than anybody else in 100 miles.

The ones around here have a small amount of firearms at good prices (sometimes the cheapest, sometimes just above it). They have a fairly good selection of ammunition as well. I'll go there when I need ammo, but I prefer a local store (Bullet Trap) and the big Cabela's in Fort Worth when I'm gun shopping or wanting to burn sometime time daydreaming about my next firearm.

I have gone to Academy for years here in Texas. I stock up on my 3-gun shotshells there when dove season opens. I treat Academy like I treat Cabelas - watch for sales, they can be good.

I go there to see the guns,,,

But I never buy them there.

I'm a firm believer in spending my bucks at a small business when I can.

Dave (the Evil Pawn Shop Guy) will always come close enough to the Academy price that the difference in price is worth the good will I get from buying locally.

Last time I bought a used S&W from Dave,,,
He threw in a box of .38 special,,,
The box was water damaged,,,
The rounds were fine.

But that's just my particular situation,,,
Your mileage may vary.

Academy: Good ammo source

Howdy,

Academy is also a good ammo source. I've found good prices on target ammo as well as a reasonable selection of defense ammo. I'm a member of the Academy fan club here in La.

PS: I'll also add that unlike many local stores, Academy is seldom out of the popular handgun calibers.

They do have good prices and sometimes a good selection. They usually have plenty of glocks, xd's, jframes and 22 target plinkers. A very nice, young couple have opened a gun store about 2 miles from my house. I do most of my gun biz with them now. I would rather support the little guy if the prices are good.
