About to buy Glock 19...upgrades?

rodfac, that clears it up nicely. Thank you.

I did get a chance to check my [Glock] night sights, and I'm pretty sure they're metal. They glow in the dark, for sure. I've done the incredibly scientific "lights out in the bathroom" test. Truth be told, I've got a set of Trijicons on a different pistol, and I like the Glock sights better because the dots are larger.

Uncle Malice, what division is Production Sharpshooter? Production is a USPSA Division, and SharpShooter is an IDPA classification. The Flager Cup appears to be an NRA event, not USPSA or IDPA.

The only real upgrade any Glock needs is a butt plug, and it is an absolute MUST if you ask me:

http://www.brownells.com/handgun-parts/grip-parts/grip-plugs/grip-plug-for-glock--prod7603.aspx

This is a small plastic plug that goes in the hollow space at the bottom of the grip, behind the magazine. Only the realest operators operating operationally are cool enough for this upgrade though, so make sure you also have a pair of Oaklies, a shaved head, 511 pants, and a Tapout t-shirt before you order the butt plug otherwise it won't work.

Oh, and if you have to ask what the butt plug does, you aren't cool enough for one anyway.

;)

Model12Win, outside of "Tactical Plumbers", the plug is somewhat useful. I use them on my carry Glocks to put a trigger reset spring and extractor up under the plug...

My G19 is still stock because I carry a G17
My Upgrades: XS Big Dot Sights (Love them)
Talon Rubberized Grip
Butt Plug (If you are getting a gen 4 and want to use the back straps, they make special plugs for Gen 4 only).
Tungsten Safety Plunger (was complaining about trigger, and buddy had a spare Lightning Strike Plunger and installed it . Took ten minutes maybe ) what a difference in smoothness. I am thinking also of extended magazine release, but i probably wont. (My wife has one on her G26 and extended Slide Lock release. It really helps her)

Gen4 Glock 19. Butt plug/extended slide release Glock one (I know Glock do not use that term, tuff) TruGlo night sights, green.

Carry it, shoot it in IDPA. Carry G17 spare mag. I have two set up the same.

Never had the plastic guide rods fail in any way.

So most guys dont immediately replace the plastic guide rod with a stainless steel one?

My Glock 17 is over 20 years old and has countless thousands of rounds through it. I toyed with the idea of replacing the plastic guide rod; even wished the plastic guide rod would break so that I could feel vindicated by replacing it with a shiny stainless one.... - but it won't. It would be a waste of money and unneeded extra weight by replacing the plastic guide rod.

G21c

Yeah, I think it was designed for a plastic guide rod!

My G21c and G20 are completely stock, had the frames updated by Glock to gen 3 with rail.

Aside from maybe a connector or trigger spring (which I may do) - like 20.00 bucks or so, what would you do to your gun if you have fired so many rounds through?

Another post said a replacement tungsten or similar safety plunger would make smoother?

What about these nice firing pins I keep seeing - drilled lighter or titanium? Do they make a difference?

Of course sites - I may just end up getting a G41 MOS and some red dot instead of futzing with my current gun.

Enough with the bickering over market shares, IDPA, USPSA and the NRA. I've removed 8 posts already. Please don't make me come back here and start issuing infractions.

Before you buy ANY upgrades aside from a better pair of sights, buy some ammo and train with it. NO aftermarket part will make YOU a better shooter or serve as a replacement for building familiarity with your firearm. I would personally say that you should NOT make any changes to the gun until you are already able to shoot solid groups with the gun stock. It's really easy to get sucked into an endless cycle of swapping out parts in a vain attempt to become a better shooter instead of solidifying your fundamentals with the firearm from the very beginning.

EDIT: Forgot that I also wanted to point out that if you follow this advice and build familiarity with the gun before you change anything on it, you'll develop a better idea of what you'd like to change based on your own preferences rather than just changing the gun based on what works for others. That way you can avoid buying something just because somebody else bought it and buy the upgrades that address issues that YOU would like to address based on what you have learned from shooting the gun yourself.

No upgrades needed...that sucker will run flawless...no break in needed either. Love my Sigs , have two of them. But my G23 is the only pistol I own that has never had a malfunction of any kind EVER... Junk ammo, reloads, HPs, don't matter. It will even run dirty, and dry, flawlessly. Can't say all that about my P229 that I love Dearly...Enjoy one of the finest hardest working defensive hanguns around.

As already stated, run it stock with exception of changing out the sights. Master it as it comes out of the box before doing any changes.

One of the first thing I do with my auto loaders is break out the dremil with a little polishing compound and buff the feed ramp to a mirror. Be sure to just polish and not grind or you will change the angle of feed.

I'm no gunsmith, but it seems like a bad idea to do this on a Glock.

First, it's not necessary. Of all the common problems reported with Glocks, feeding isn't one of them. Glocks are legendary for being able to feed all types of ammo. Heck, my Glock 19 will even feed empty brass. In fact, this is one of the criticisms of Glock pistols: They make their chambers loose so they'll feed all sorts of different ammo flawlessly, but this makes them more prone to kabooms when extremely over-powered ammo is used (this is mostly an issue with very hot 10mm ammo or bad reloads).

Second, you're going to mess up the feed ramp finish if you do that. Glock barrels are nitrided, which makes them more durable and very corrosion resistant. So by buffing the feed ramp you're "fixing" a non-existent problem and removing the protective finish in the meantime.

My Gen 4 G19 has Trijicon HD sites, Vickers Tactical slide stop and mag release and a Ghost Rocket trigger connector. All of these were simple to install. Shoot thousands of rounds through her with no issues yet. Also have a KKM threaded barrel to shoot reloads with.

Glock factory sights suck.

I think the Glock 19 is a great gun out of the box. Like some have suggested, the sights aren't the greatest but other than that, I don't think it needs much.

Actually, I just pondered this a bit today....

When I get a Glock 19, I think I will put Ameriglo Hackathorn or CAP sights on it.

I would also fit a Ghost 3.5 Rocket Connector...I think...it would be the one that has overtravel and pre travel adjustment.

Might add rubber tape grip to grip and slide.

If I do go with the Glock, I will ...... and get the grip plug

Why?

I could also do nothing and try to break the sights off.

I run a bone stock 19 save for a little bit of shaving on the trigger guard so it doesnt dig into my large middle finger knuckle. I miiight change to some different sights some day but I shoot them well for now. Im of the opinionbyou learn how to run the gun rather than trying to get the gun to run for you. BUT I see alot of people spending alot of money on guns trying to make them run when they completely ignore trying to become better shooters.
