ABC treats NRA fairly and honestly tonight...

First - It is, IMHO, poor form for anyone to even joke about anyone voting with their guns on this, or any pro-RKBA forum. These statements, again IMHO, are exactly the kind of words that the anti-gunners feed to the sheeple to demonstrate what a half-crazed group of violent red-necks we are. These forums should, like doctors, first of all, do no harm!
Second - The point left out of all the background check at gun-shows talk I have heard is that they want checks on private sales. If you are a dealer, you have to run background NICS checks on all handgun sales to non-licensees, period. (Not to include some LEOs & the like...) The question is, "As a PRIVATE citizen, do you belive the Federal Goverment has the right to know who you sell a legally owned firearm to?" I don't belive it is any of the Govs business what I legally own.
Thirdly - If the States are busy prosecuting gun criminals,(as PJ claimed), what is the need for additional Federal gun laws?
The NRA (I am a member) was depicted as a bully, hell-bent on passing out guns without thought. All of the educational, historical, safety, and conservation activities were completly ignored.
So we all knew what was going to come down on this charade, so why watch? For me, when someone at work or wherever says, "Hey, old PJ really pointed out what a bunch of SOB them gun-toters are, huh?", I can, if the occasion warrants, go over, point-by-point, the half-truths, fact-skewing and lies that were presented as a calm, non-partisan look at the right to keep and bear arms. Being well armed implies possessing much more than mearly weapons and ammunition.

I KNEW this'd be all over TFL by the time I got here... I was not surprised in the least the crap that PJ spewed tonite!

What is really sad, to me, is that now that this has been aired, the sheeple in this country will be even MORE against the NRA than they already are! They will let themselves be spoon-fed that schlock. But, then again, that was probably ABC's agenda in the first place. :(

abcimixab, would your handle happen to be a play on the drug "Abciximab?" Just curious... :)

I watched the show and agree with many of the posts. It started out somewhat fair, given the warning, and ended prejudiced.

Interestingly enough, I watched most of another show after that on yhe History channel concerning drug use in the US. The parallels were unbeleivable! This show focused mainly on Marijuana use. I realize there are pro and con people on TFL as far as drugs go. Drugs in the following context refer only to marijuana.

Some of the key points were:

There was no problem with drugs, but they were outlawed for POLITICAL reasons.

One of the primary reasons was a move by the SW states to send back Mexican immigrants.

A law was passed that required a license for drugs, but only a few were produced. Modeled after the 1934 firearms act. You had to arrive with illegal drugs to apply for the license. DUH!

Hollywood produced anti-drug films.

The media/government inflated the statistics and downside

Does any of this sound familiar??

The only good thing to come out of this show was the public acknowledgement of the number of supporters the NRA has. I hope that alone opened the eyes of our elected officials.

Hmmm, Wayne "the hammer" LaPierre? If only the NRA were actually that effective.

As for the question as to why did they cooperate; the special would have gone on, weather or not ABC had direct quotes.

For a piece of propaganda, I don't think it was very effective. At best, it solidified positions on both sides. But I don’t think it did a good job at addressing the undecided.

The best course of action; write a letter of complaint to ABC about their blatant one-sided political programming. CC the commissioners at the FCC that just suspended the personal and political attack rules for 60 days. (See http://www.fcc.gov/Bureaus/Mass_Media/News_Releases/2000/nrmm0041.html) If they don’t receive complaints, this is the only type of news program that will get on the air.

Contact info for the Commissioner’s is listed below. They each have a home page on the FCC site, with an e-mail form.

Oh, yeah. And vote.

Darthmaum, it would. For my handle, I tried to use the most unlikely word I had ever encountered, and then I changed the spelling. (wouldn't want to be guilty of copyright infringement) :)

It would be nice to have an option of watching full interviews rather that what the media wants to present. From what I saw of the program, the common folk interviewed were not particularly articulate (at least that is what was shown). Certainly there are ones who could defend the 2nd Amendment, but I don't think those would be aired.

Maybe this will give the NRA membership another bump...

Peter Jennings was born in Canada and worked the London desk of ABC for a while. Has he become a US citizen yet? If not, this is a case of a foreigner meddling in the internal affairs of the United States! (If not a citizen, he should be made to register as a foreign lobbyist!!!)

I remember back when the Republicans had the Contract With America, they were vilified by the media and Democrats. (There's a difference?) Ol' Peter Jennings had a radio address after the election - in which the Democrats lost 54 House seats - vilifying the American people for acting like spoiled little children throwing a tantrum. Fair and impartial he's not.

So given his history, the fact that his program was ADVOCACY, not journalism, is no surprise.

But take heart - it's garbage like this that has caused the network news shows to lose a third of their audience over the past decade.

Yep same shpill. I liked the part where PJ said that sales for SW went down after the boycott and that the other companies didn't settle.

Last night's ABC show on the NRA was nothing more than a hack job with the goal of dividing gunowners before a major election. Gore couldn't have bought better advertising than ABC News gave him for free. That program was aimed squarely at all of our hunting/sport shooting friends who don't see gun rights as a number one issue. It tried to imply that they were ignorant if they voted on that issue alone while at the same time claiming they were being deceived by the NRA.

We need to get out there and start countering this propaganda with our less politically active friends and acquaintances (make sure they saw it before you launch into your defense however).

A few points to bring up:

1) Prosecution numbers for Brady violations. Jennings claimed 605, NRA claims 1. The NRA gets its numbers from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University. Since the Clinton Administration has refused a legal Freedom of Information Act request by TRAC for Federal prosecutions (and TRAC is currently suing them over this very issue), it is entirely possible that their data is wrong - HOWEVER, is 605 out of 250,000 really that much of an improvement?

2) Stupak ignored some of the other aspects of the bill besides the waiting period - things like an executive commission able to enact unlimited taxes on gun shows without any further Congressional authorization needed. A definition of gun show that was so broad that it included practically all private sales. The common practice of the FBI to shut down NICS over the weekend (95% MY ASS!) should be familiar to most of us by now. Let's not forget the 60-day notification that you were planning on having a gun show (which was defined so broadly that even private sales might count as a "gun show") or else its a crime...

I thought Penis Jennings was very biased in his tone, and in the way the Bart Stupak part of the story was one-sided against NRA (poor Bart; trying to do the right thing; standing up for reasonable controls, but the NRA gets mad and unleashes their wrath for not voting their way). Actually, it made me proud to be an NRA member - feeling a little powerful and superior. LaPierre kicked some butt, I thought. He had a grasp of all the issues, and appeared very sincere and made our case well. We should keep him, for sure.

What I saw was an attempted hatchet job. I was prepared for something much worse than it actually was. Yes, they did try to make the NRA look like a bully especially with regards to Stupak and *&*. Poor ole Ed Shultz sob, sob, sob. In my opinion it made the NRA look stronger and more dedicated to the fight for the 2nd than they really are. How many of us here have stated that the NRA is a bunch of wimps who wold compromise our rights away if given the chance? I know I have and I even let my membership expire once cause they were not doing what I thought they should be. Did those 2 anecdotes make the NRA seem like a bunch of wimps? Heck no, they made the NRA look like it was ready to kick butt and take names. The NRA has come to the verge of ousting a sitting Congressman for not voting the correct way. It has almost bankrupted *&* because they went against the NRA. It fired and blacklisted a lobbyist for going against them. Heck I wish they would really operate that way ALL the time. I'd give them more $$ if they did. Yes there were many snide comments ala single issue voting being stupid, the NRA not wanting common sense controls..., but did they have an effect? On me no, on most here no. The soccer moms; who cares, they were a lost cause the instant their 2 active brain cells began to argue with eachother. ATTEMPTED hatchet job is what I saw.

Actually, I knew it was going to be a hatchet job in the first few seconds. The camera panned from the old guns over to the NRA logo. As the logo came into view the audio was police sirens. Talk about "subliminable."

Not one news source has given the NRA adequate time to explain the problems with the gun show bill or with the "&" agreement.
Why should Peter Jennings be any different?

First, I'm still available as a sponsor if you want to join NRA.

Next, I was shocked that it was as fair as it was. It was obvious that even if Jennings didn't care about being fair, he's feeling pressure to appear fair. A good sign.

Frankly, it was a weak attempt at a hatchet job. They tried, and there just wasn't much to find. It is irritating that Jennings lied so blatantly about the S&W deal (just a deal for triggerlocks, of course, and it only applies to S&W products....) but, overall, that's just WEAK. He couldn't come with anything stronger than that? I think it's a win for our side.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Peter Jennings proudly state in an ad that ABC News runs everyday to promote itself on its local affiliates that, and I am paraphrasing as I don't pay too close attention to it because it makes me sick everytime I hear it, that "We are Journalists, not historians.... You can get 'em with a good story." You know the ad I am referring to, it has a short clip of students running under guard from Columbine with Jennings saying "America has shown it has a problem dealing with violence with guns." Excuse me, I think I'm sick, where's that barf icon?
