Buchanan is a conservative catholic. I do not think that his denominational affiliation has much to do with his stand on certain principles. I have been listening to him debate w/socialists even before he wrote speeches for and was an advisor to Pres. Ronald Reagan. The reason a few people, I believe, think he is a "religious radical" is because his views have the objective basis in Divine establishment principles rooted in the Bible. Divine est. principles include Biblical principles dealing with God given establishments such as; freedom (including free will/volition), marriage between man and woman, family, proper sense of govt w/in the doctrine of liberty, etc. These principles are BIBLICAL, Not religious. Unfortunately religion and Divinely established principles are wrongly equated with one another in current media. There are major differences between the two.
FWIW, I am not catholic. Having listened to many Protestant and Baptist ministers, much to some of there shame, I do believe that he could run circles, of truth, around a few. For a great deal of my life I was in much agreement with the media and the indoctrination of the govt schools. I am only trying to be objective in defense to Mr. Buchanan, not that he realy needs any defense. Anyone who has honestly taken time to listen to his debates on Crossfire, McGlauflin Group, Radio interviews, columns for major newspapers, speeches, etc. knows exactly where he stands on the major issues including the Div. Est. Principle of right to the means of self defense without govtal intrusion. I know that this sounds "religious". But that is because the govt schools and socialistic media has succeeded in training current culture in this mindset. Many of the founding fathers of this previously free nation would agree. Their writtings and thinking on these issues are available to the honest student of the truth. Although I do not have a blanket agreement with him on every view, it is my opinion that regardless of Pat Buchanons chances at the polls, he is an honest student of history and the truth. As the topic began, America was founded upon certain....er...."principles". Those of the birth of this nation are far different from those principles common in America today. If we are discussing whether or not a vote for Buchanon is a vote for America, we need to define, WHICH America we are talking about: Does he most conform to American roots, or do his beliefs most resemble those common today? Which America do we want?
