A USP for me!

After my not-so-enlightening experience with my little Para C6.45, I decided to search for another .45. I've never been a big fan of polymer, but when I started compiling the specs of what I'd like, pistols got weeded out until I was left with little to choose from.

Oleg suggested the Mauser M2, but after I got my hands on one, I decided the grip was too chunky in the wrong spot and the manual safety was just... well... in the most retarded location.

So I did research on the HK USP Compact and really liked it. I bought one at the gun show Saturday - complete with MMC night sights and 3 mags. It only had about 400-500 rounds fired through it. The original owner wanted the stainless version, so this one was for sale (thanks, Zander, for keeping an eye out for me!). It had been very well taken care of and was immaculate inside and out. This variant has the ambi safety and decocker.

I haven't been able to take it to the range yet (waaah!) but couldn't get myself to leave it at home, either. So I'm here at work with my Taurus 617 on one side and the HK on the other. :D

As for the Para... my brother snatched it up and he's taking it to the range (new recoil system installed). He knows the history of it, but he's thinking about buying it from me.

I bought a NIB HK USP45 Compact in early May, and finally was able to pick it up last week. I didn't have time to clean out the cosmoline-like gunk that was inside of the slide and frame (mostly in the slide, though). It's clean now, and will be taken to the range this week for a test-drive. I tried one that belongs to a friend's wife. I liked it. I am sure that I will like mine. Please post a range report.

Sorry the Para didn't pan out. The polymer frame of the HK spreads recoil forces over an area versus the concentrated impact of a steel frame.

I love the full sized 5" Barrel 1911 but not the compacts.

HK's are unique. One can send them back to the factory and have the fire mechanism changed for about $30.00 U.S. A traditional DA is easily transformed to DA only due to the modular construction.

I don't have any experience with the customer service over there, but I can say that I really really like the USP series guns. My favorite polymer-framed handguns. My full-size .40 has been a swiss watch. The thing just runs and runs and runs.

Have fun! :)

I reallly like the USP line of pistols. They just work well in my hands. Like'em so much, I picked up my 4th one last week ;)

Congrats, happy shooting & don't forget to give us a range report on that new compact of yours.

The USP/Compact series are very good pistols. My gunsmith says he doesn't see one in the shop very often, they break even less than Glocks. Coming from him, that's a ringing endorsement...he's not a fan of polymer.

runt_of_the_litter,

Without going into a lot of details, the few experiences I've had with H&K's customer service have been great. Polite, friendly, prompt, etc. I've never had to deal with them on a "major" issue, but have a friend who had a gun repaired for free and returned to him quickly. He was the second owner of the firearm (so the lifetime warranty wasnt' in effect).

What spooked me about the HK was when I disassembled it and saw the teeny-tiny slide rail. I went "eep, is that all there is?" and Oleg said, "that's all it needs." I guess I'm used to my Kahr's rail running the length of the frame.

I do like how easy it is to disassemble, though. And comparing the recoil system part that broke on the Para, it looks better constructed.

I hope this one works for me; my score so far is 2 and 2 - my Walther failed, my Kahr is fine, my Taurus is fine, and my Para failed.

Those little rails are plenty strong. The USP is the only handgun on the market that can fire Triton's hot SMC loads AS IS.

Good choice.

H&Kusp compact

ROL : I have had two H&K pistols. One a full sized 45 in variant #1, The other a compact model in variant #1 in 357sig. I use the latter as my CCW weapon the full sized was my first duty weapon.

Both are and were excellent overall firearms. The full sized usp was one of the most accurate pistols i've had the pleasure to shoot. The compact model in 357 sig took a long time to find. I installed a set of MMC adjustable sights, other than that its stock.

I am a 45acp fan, my current duty weapon is chambered for this round. I've been shooting some 450 SMC thru it and impressed with this round. I've been trying to find the 165 grain version of this round but noone seems to stock it yet....:(

H&K service is excellent. I had night sites installed on my full sized version. To make a long story short, there was a mix up and i got the sights and installation for free!!!

One of the best things is you can carry this weapon "cocked & locked" if you wish to do so. Overall i would say you made a great choice... ENJOY....:)

You can't go wrong with this gun! Extremely versatile carry options
and reliable and accurate and durable and well-engineered and fires any bullet type and has 'appeal' and the list goes onnnnnnnn...

I've got two USP's and I love them. If the checkering bothers you, there are plenty of fixes for that. I have a Hogue grip on my USP9 and an Agrip on my Tactical, and both work very well for me.
Niether of these guns have ever had a FTF or FTE.
The triggers do tend to smooth out a bit with use.
The recoil reduction mechanism really works (at least on the full size guns) as the felt recoil is less than on the comparable Glock, especially when +P's are used.
All in all, a great pistol in my opinion.

Universal because of the many (9) configurations any USP can be converted to. DA/SA, DAO, lefty, etc., etc.

Runt,

congrats on the pistol. Interestingly, my first handgun was a NIB Para P13 and that pistol had more separate problems than the sum of all my range rentals. While I was very apprehensive to shed my first, I traded it back to the place I bought it from for a full sized USP .45. Didn't really know much about HK back then but needless to say I'm a BIG fan now. No regrets from day one.
