A take on a futuristic weapon system

I apologize if there was a misunderstanding. Your tone sounded very condescending to me, and that usually is the easiest way to strike a nerve with me.

In truth, writing fiction is, really, just a personal hobby for me. I've only got one short story completed under my belt, and no plans to write another anytime soon.

Where I got the basic idea for the weapon was from a study I read on the internet somewhere where they were describing ideas for a weapon that could fire large-bore rounds for close quarters battle, ala a submachine gun, and small-bore, high velocity rounds for long range target engagement, Ala the M16 or even G11.

The recoil absobtion system I got from the AN-94 and similar ideas to reduce the recoil and increase controlability of small arms.

And many people think caseless will be the wave of the future, so I wrapped those three components into one little rifle.

I have a couple of ideas you might like to incorporate:

1) Make the guns self-cleaning! Maybe you could incorporate
the use of detergent additives into the advanced propellants.

2) Instead of having the magazine clip into the stock, maybe
have it lock into the forward handguards or something as
part of the handhold or something.

3) Instead of a selector for range (too complicated), have a
selector option for tracer. It seems as though, even though
there is a multitude of different ammunition types, the main
military issue round is, and will be, ball/AP. Incorporate a
tracer option into the ammunition itself that will activate
on a signal from the gun's CPU.

Guns with CPUs and electronics

I would stay away from guns with electronics, including lasers or electromagnetic rail guns, for the simple fact that you don't want a small arm that A) requires a battery or B) can be disabled by an electromagnetic pulse weapon.

The option for range isn't like a switch you flip; a change of the magazine will give you CQB or long range ammo. Though there'd be no reason you couldn't carry a spare mag of your specialty ammo of choice, like AP or light explosive.

I would expect that tracers would be incorporated (every third round, maybe) into a standard ammo mag. But for some ops you may not want them.

MadMike, thanks for the link.

I like to write, and I have delusions of someday doing it more seriously. Mostly I just enjoy it as a hobby, but I'm always looking for places to get ideas on technique. www.sfwa.org has lots of good tips for aspiring Sci-Fi writers as well.

Hey Nightcrawler, I commented on one of your previous posts on this subject. Sorry if this suggestion is redundant but, in 200 years, why not energy weapons?

They would not REPLACE mechanical/projectile weapons, just be an alternative. Like a sniper rifle - a specialized tool. We already have functional lasers capable of killing misiles at 20 miles. In 200 years I'd imagine we'd have something similar that's man portable. At least enough power to kill a human.

And what about rail guns? Again you would have to have a power sorce and, yes, would be subject to EMP's (which is a good piont made by a previous post). And, again, these would not replace the more traditional mechanical/projectile style. In a rail gun you would need no propellant. You would need a power sorce, though. The bullets would be very small. I suppose you wouldn't need to wait for a bolt to cycle either - just feed the bullets in the "acceleration chamber" as fast as you can and they're off. You could even have multiple projectiles be loaded at the same time making it a rail shotgun.
Technology shrinks itself in size every, what, 6-9 months? A hand held laser gun might be a reality in 20-40 years. Look at what we have now only after 30 years of research. What would 200 years give us?
Our knowledge of electro-magnetic stuff is getting good too. This is also only in it's beginning stages.

Sorry to re-hash this. But it's a semi-new idea anyway. Just trying to help.

Hey, what about plasma launchers? Like flame throwers but with 10,000 times the heat.
Or, what about electronic pulse stuff? Focused ions that have a severe physiological effect.
Or, better yet: microwave technology. A lot like a laser but can penetrate through a lot of stuff and not bounce off of mirrors. Microwave technology is also VERY powerful. You can actually take a household microwave oven, focus the beam, and cook a guy at 200 yards - or so they say. I've seen books on it.
Fully automatic grenade launchers are always cool. What about a grenade that contained a plasma in an electromagnetic field. When the field collapses, the plasma is free'd and everything is incinerated in a 20' area.
Or subsonic wave technology. We use it as a non-lethal weapon against riots now. It makes you feel sick, dizzy, crap your pants and black out.
Along the same line as microwave is X-ray. This was going to be used in our StarWars program. X-rays work good too.

Just some basic suggestions. Do you like them?

Energy Weapons

I tried to stay away from Energy Weapons. Railguns are used as spacecraft weaponry in the story, but the spacecraft has an appropriately huge power source.

The main reason I didn't incorporate them is not because I think they're impossible or won't be develop, but simply because I didn't want them. *shrug* My universe, my rules, right? :D
