In general, do you feel that laws covering the sale of firearms should be made more strict, less strict or kept as they are now?

B. Less Strict

Register all handguns, at the time of purchase, so that they could be traced by the police when necessary for criminal investigations.

B. Disapprove

Require all handgun buyers to pass a criminal background check, whether they are buying the gun from a gun dealer or a private individual; at a store or gun show?

A. Approve

Ban the possession of handguns except by the police and other authorized personnel.

B. Disapprove

Require all guns sold in the US to have a trigger lock, a device that prevents a gun from being fired until the device is unlocked and removed.

B. Disapprove

Hold adults criminally responsible if they fail to store a gun safely and a child harms himself or someone else with that gun.

A. Approve

The government should do everything it can to keep handguns out of the hands of criminals, even if it means that it will be harder for law-abiding citizens to purchase handguns.

C. Disagree

In your opinion, does the US Constitution guarantee individual citizens the right to own firearms?

A. Yes

My reasoning for the queestion is that it would draw on the parellells that people who favor less strist gun laws generally favor stricter penalties for misusing guns. (10-20-Life)
Instead of just being a bunch of man babies that want their toys

Joab -- I can't argue the logic, but I can't see the distinction between guns and any other deadly weapons. A weapon is a weapon is a weapon. And at least where I have lived, the increased penalties for crimes committed with a weapon are already on the books and I have no problem with that.

As far as implied mandatory sentencing goes -- well, let's just say that anytime we start saying "mandatory", I start thinking about "zero-tolerance" nonsense and plug in "zero-common-sense". On the flip side of it, I have no real problem with life sentences without parole as a sentencing option for repeat violent offenders.

Oh, and by 10-20-life, are you referring to 1st offense, 2nd offense, 3rd offense? Back home in Tx (not sure about La and Ga) they already have something sorta like that -- a "3 strikes" law, but the 3rd strike applies (applied? maybe they changed it since then) to ANY felony, not just those aggravated with weapons. For that matter, it applied to ANY 3 time felon, it could have been 3 consecutive non-violent felonies. There were a bunch of folks up in arms over that, lifers who "never hurt anyone". Not that I had any sympathy for them, but the "feelers" (you know who I mean) get all bent out of shape over it -- personally, I think that since they knew about that law beforehand (it isn't any secret there), they don't get my sympathy.

Hold adults criminally responsible if they fail to store a gun safely and a child harms himself or someone else with that gun.

C. Not Sure

I agree, but this is a gun survey

10-20-Life

10 years mandatory for using a gun in the commission of a crime

20 years mandatory if you shoot it

25 to Life mandatory if you shoot someone

The program reduced gun crime by 30 % in 6 years in Florida.

The only sticking point is a 3 year minimum for a felon being merely in posession of a gun

And I think the 3 Strikes law sucks big time, but that's for another thread
