A problem with the wife.

My wife is a non-gun person. She does know safe handling and can actually hit the target pretty good, but she is not a gun person. We have a beretta 96 next to the bed. She spilled a drink (wont admit to it so not sure what) and apparently did a quick wipe down and kept her mouth shut. I have fired the gun several times since but noticed my hand getting black from the hogue grips. Out of habit I decided to do a quick cleanup tonight. The entire action trigger assembly everything was coated with something. 2-1/2 hours of a quick cleanup later it finally looks like the day I brought it home. This reminds me of the old joke.
Why are divorces so expensive?
Because there worth it!!
Lucky for her she is beautiful, still considering smothering her with a pillow while she sleeps. :D

Add her to that list of no access. I have felt your pain. Mine repeating " I don't see why you need to make such a big deal about it." does not make it any better.

Things happen, I'm sure she didn't mean to do it. Just play it cool and reassure her that you're not going to snap over it. Then smother her :D Just kidding.

My son spilt a Sprite on my new Blackhawk about an hour after I had given it the new gun cleaning. I learned to detail strip it that day. I was amazed at how easy the Ruger BH comes apart.

I think you're better served in this case by "letting sleeping dogs lie."

Yes, it entailed you doing extra work ... but I sure wouldn't stir up a hornet's nest over it. She's like as not to stay well away from your guns now, after this episode.

Welcome to married life. Rest assured your habits are just as irritating to her as hers are to you.

But if you really need to get even ...:D hot blue a pistol in the oven. The dishwasher can be a pretty handy degreasing tool as long as you get the stuff out as soon as it stops. Her "good scissors" have many uses. Those weird little fingernail tools are likewise wonderful. Fingernail polish is a good loctite. The list is endless, but the pillow might be coming for you.

I would not have spent so long on the cleaning. Hot water will take out most of the gunk. Compressed air will blow most of the water out. Let it dry for a bit. Spray with some GunScrubber, or Rusty Duck then clean like normal. Takes maybe a half hour tops. The next day give another spray down, and blow out. Wipe it off, and be done with it.

Heck I fire rifles with corrosive ammo, I have had my carry guns soaked through from rain more times than I can count. My carry gun has gone into the muddy river with me more than once when I took a drink in a kayak. Also I have spilled a couple of Big Gulps on myself. Be glad it was not your lap top the drink was spilled on.

Hmmmm. I'm an honorable man, but...

I would take it out for the next few nights, and clean it each night. Then put it away with a concerned look on your face. The third night, explain to her, you are sorry, you tried to clean it, but what ever was spilled on/in it had completeley corupted the spring latch assembly, which is not replacable. Then with great sorrow, purchase a new gun, new ammo, a new gun case, a new cleaning kit, and anything else that grabs your attention in the store. After all, you did try to fix the old one that she had ruined. Offer to buy her a new set of coasters to show you aren't mad.
Don't let her read this site.

jstgsn,

Good idea, but the OP will need to throw in some words along the lines of, "If I'd known about it sooner, I probably could have saved the gun, but since I didn't know the corrosion had too much of a head start on me...."

Aside: I'd have just dumped it in hot soapy water, then dunked it in alcohol to get rid of the water, let the alcohol dry (very quick), then lubed it up. I've done that (minus the lube) on all sorts of electronics...works well.

Is she still under warranty? Maybe you can send her back and have her tweaked a littel bit. Oh and make sure they pay the postage. :D

If it was a Glock, this wouldn't have been a problem at all.....

Oh, I just had to say it....Y'all Glock fans were thinkin it.:D:D:D

Eh I'd blow it off, clean the weapon out and pamper it a little bit.

Saying that, I nearly shart a brick when my fiance dropped my 1911 (unloaded naturally). It normally would have been a pick it up and dust it off. However, the day before my friend (a woodworking mastermind) just finished my new grips made out of figgered Brazilian Mahogany. Luckily it landed steel down and instead of damaging the gun it dented the Earth. :D

Our ladies are always so concerned about how we think of them. I would hate to have my lady upset because she thinks I'm mad at her for something as petty as this. Not saying I wouldn't be a little irritated, because I would, but if I wanted to be mad at her I'm sure there are larger things in life.

I'm sure she just didn't tell you because she was mortified when it happened. I doubt she did it on purpose. I'm sure she is well aware that it didn't cost you a bus ticket and a subway sandwich. She has no idea how to take that thing down and make it "okay" again. Write off the losses and hope you never find out, lest she wants to feel the wrath of husbandry! Either way, I'd also blow it off. Be thankful the gun still works and that you still have a family to protect!

EDIT: After reading another poster, I second what he said. Feign ignorance. Gun's busted. Thanks, babe. Gotta go buy another. You better put in a few extra hours at the hospital to pay it off, mmmk?

Makes me glad that my wife likes guns, she knows that if she was to spill something on my precious, she would clean the mess and we would clean up the shotty back to new.

I bought an almost new 1911 stainless Springer real cheap from an old friend cause his wife spilled some Coke on it as it lay in the opened, factory, plastic case. He didn't realize what she had done, closed the case and a couple weeks later when he opened the case, the Coke had eaten the finish turning it black in spots.

When I paid him for the pistol, I also took a 12pk. of Coke and gave it to his wife. ;)
