A Potential winner in the Army's Mobile Combat Vehicle Tests

The Italians used some Centauros in Somalia with good results. They survived attacks with Molotov cocktails quite well. They were also fitted with explosive reactive armor which protected them from RPG-7 rocket propelled antitank projectiles.

Tank guns have such high velocities and are so accurate (at least NATO tanks) that they are practically line-of-sight weapons. If you can see it, you can destroy it. So there generally would be no instance where a modern TD using direct fire cannons can out-range a tank.

My understanding is that American requirement is more intended as a fire support vehicle than a dedicated anti-tank platform.

I Do! :D

Somethimg else may help the Centauro in the competition. It has a large hull about 24 feet long (three feet longer than a Bradley). The Army particularly wants to be able to carry a full nine man rifle squad in a singke vehicle It looks like the Centauro APC version will be able to do this. Most other wheeled armpred vehicles are not large enough to do this.
