A paycheck per year dedicated to defense and hunting

I am sorta in your boat and have been doing it for a couple years now and don't plan to buy more for a good while. I categorized by...well category instead of use.

Handgun:Commander sized 1911. Used in an HD and CCW role currently.Had this before this since 2009.

Rifle:Bolt-Action .270 WIN. Hunting Only, Will take elk and black bear easily at distances Shotgun couldn't dream of. I feel comfortable shooting this at anything but Kodiak with the right load in the CONUS. Got this in 2010.

Shotgun:Weatherby PA-08 Pump 12 Gauge. This will do Birds, Small Game, Big Game, HD Got this in 2011.

Rimfire:Mossberg Plinkster .22LR. Small game and shoot for stupid cheap.

That is really all that I feel is NEEDED, the .22 is questionable as it's role is filled by the shotgun and its purely more economical for me to shoot rifle. The .270 rarely gets shot, the shotgun, .22, and handgun get shot most often. I am in the process of building an AR in 5.56/.223 to shoot centerfire rifle more affordably than the .270 WIN and I want something semi-auto centerfire for coyotes and in the back of my mind in case of a SHTF situation. I almost laugh at the people preparing hard-core for this scenario but so much is going on I figured I'd be more comfortable laughing while I prepare a little myself.

I thought of this since my last post. If you are looking to get function over form and economize then a used Mosin-Nagant can be caught on sale at Cabela's for about $100, regularly around $150. The 7.62X54R should be plenty enough chambering for most all NA game even at distance. I've seen new 10/22 Rugers recently at Dick's for around $130 and you just can't beat the economy of the .22 LR ammo.

@ kraigwy: Well perhaps defending your castle might require long shots from the tower, but I just need to cover the front and back door of my humble home.:D

@ ripnbst: We are on the same page for sure.

@ thedaddycat: I do have three rimfire rifles that I plan to retire. They belonged to my father and uncle. I am heading out to DIck's today for ski gear...I'll swing by the gun counter to check things out.

I have plenty of guns for that. But to have the best HP/Long range target rifle available is well worth a months pay.

I may be a lot of things, but "gun poor" isn't one of them.

@ thedaddycat: You can't swing a cat without hittin'...wait there is cat, but I wouldn't swing 'em his owner is well armed!

@johnbt: There are no rules against bi-monthly paychecks, that's how I'm paid.

Depending on how big that pay check is I would get in the following order

1. Get a 12ga, probably a Mossberg 500 combo

2. A used 38 or 357 revolver, Probably a police trade in

3. A Savage 10 or 110 or current model in 3006 or 308

The shotgun will cover HD and some hunting. The revolver will handle CC and the rifle should handle long range hunting. All three of these guns can be found on the used market. Keep in mind a dear rifle may be carried and have a few nicks but they are usually not shot much. The Police trade in revolver like wise will have a lot of carry ware but probably shot little. Good luck with your search, that can be half the fun.
