A paycheck per year dedicated to defense and hunting

In the first three years what would you buy?

Deep Concealment CCW: Kel Tec P32

Home and field defense: HK45 (Mossy could also fill the bill)

Small game hunting: Mossy 500 12 gauge and 10/22

Big game hunting: Tikka T3 in .30 06 or .300 WSM + optic

What choices would you make?

Do not tell my sweet beautiful girlfriend that I spend way more than that on guns, and reloading supplies. I mean way more than that.

How much roughly are we talking for paychecks?

As for your list here goes. Based on my janitor's salary.

Concealed Cary would be a used Glock 26 9mm. Can be had in the area of $400 give or take a few dollars.

Birds, and small game Again a Used 870 Remington Wing Master I can find them at pawnshops usualy for a bit under $300. Also a used, or new 10/22 just to burn some rounds with. As for tiny critters like rabbits, and squirrels I have a pellet gun that kills them dead out to 80 yards so far.

Home Defense Same as CCW if I am afraid to defend my life with it inside my home, why would I carry it when I left. I understand the concept of having a full sized gun that one shoots better for home defense, though I would skip that cost and get an 18 inch barrell for the 870.

Deer and larger I am gonna go Used again with a used 30-30 this is Texas, and few of the places in this state that i have hunted have I ever had to shoot over 100 yards. Price usualy runs under $400 with a decent scope already on it.

You guys are killing me! Yes, just one pay check per year after taxes. I know it's less than what is spent on food, shelter and transportation, but once one firearm is purchased the need for others is diminished.

I envy those who have budgets that allow for more discretionary spending, mine doesn't and I am trying to start over again. I have two months in a year where I am paid three times instead of just two. I though I'd dedicate one of those checks to my fight and feed collection.

Please humor me on this one, I'm trying to gather some ideas.

Anything for me now is mostly projects (rechambering, reconfiguring, etc) so it would be whatever project was next in line. That said, my funding comes from simply taking a set amount, $100, from each paycheck for the "gun fund". A separate amount from a house sale goes there each month also. So figure $500 or so each month is added to that account. Sure beats just the "one paycheck a year amount".

After the bills get paid, I allocate about $50-75 a month to my gun fund. Also, I get a bit of extra income for some side work I do that is strictly mine. This allows me a couple gun purchases a year, and a few cases of ammo too.
Nothing too extravagant, but one needs to be disciplined about finding the money if one wants to pursue this hobby

I can agree with that on long guns. 1 deer rifle 1 shotgun and 1 22 lr for small game.

As for handguns, NO WAY. I have multiple handguns for every caliber I shoot. Just way to much variety for fun useage with handguns.

If you are that strapped for cash you might want to look away from the $1000 handgun. Try a GP100. Rock solid gun and the .357 is no slouch.

well i used to only be able to afford one gun

My mossy 500 served hd, deer, small game, and bird hunting all for a few hundred dollars. Tbat was the first one i bought myself. When ccw became real to me it was in the form of a .38.
Thankfully I am doing ok now so i enjoy a bit more flexibility. But those first two are the most needed.
Thanks, Vermonter

If your hunting terrain permits, is it possible to use your 500 Mossy for your small game , big game and HD ? Purchasing a Mossy 500 combo( long and slug bbl) would be cheaper for now than purchasing a rifle. You could then take that money saved on not buying a rifle and apply it towards your ccw and ammo.

@Willie Lowman: I hear you but the HK45 is an arm I trust and can hit with very well, given my experience with the HK USP Tactical I used to own. I want to go ahead and spend where I know I can benefit the most. I wouldn't say I am strapped for cash I just can't fathom spending more than 4% of my net annual salary on guns at the moment.

@ shortwave: I live in the big square states and need a rifle for deer/elk. The Mossy will be at the same time as the other arms on the list.

@ bossman: Yep I will get back to having multiple guns for all my favorite calibers, it's just gonna take a while.

Like others here I have dropped a couple of checks on just ammo so far this year. The shelf was getting low and I don't reload all chamberings I shoot (yet) like .30-40 Krag or .303 Brit. and I wanted to top off some other bullet weights in other chamberings.

A used shotgun will cover basic HD, birds and small game. Something like a H&R single shot is about as basic as it gets. I'm not certain if you can get it or something like it with interchangable barrels so that you could also get a .30-30 barrel to cover your deer hunting. Maybe a Savage 24 would work for you? They are running $300-400 on some auction sites. There are a lot of decent used revolvers out there, and if you don't mind being limited to only .38 Special vs. also being able to shoot .357 Mag. you can get something like a snub nose wheel gun for CC at a good price point. Use any extra cash left for ammo and practice...

Assuming I didn't have the guns I do now...

Deep Concealment CCW: A Benchmade Griptillian, sharp enough to shave with. No, make that two, one for each pocket.

Home and field defense: GP100

Small game hunting: Remington 870 20 gauge, slug and shot barrel combo, 10/22

Big game hunting: Savage 111 in .300 Win Mag.
