A non-controversial, non-offensive topic, I promise!

On duty I am mandated to carry a full weapon and two "extra" full magazines. It's reasonable for uniform carry. Off duty, I carry either a fully loaded 45ACP (LW Cmdr) and one magazine or a six shot revolver and one full reload.

How many opponents are you expecting? How many misses do you plan on making? Do you really think you can replace ability with firepower?

It's a waste of time. Know what you are doing.

I'm not a police officer. If I come across a couple assault rifle-toting bank robbers who suddenly believe they're Neil McCauley I am doing my best to get out of there or hide. It's not my job to try to take them out with handguns. I'm not wearing body armor nor will the department pay for my disability and hospital costs. If they see me, then I will only have a chance to fire a few shots before they kill me. Ten 33 round mags on my waist aren't going to help much here.

Everything's a comprimise. The chances any of us are going to need to draw our weapons in defense is admittedly remote. But we carry them anyway, and for some of us, that has already paid off. If we have to draw, what are the chances we'll need more than a single magazine? Remote, but it's all just playing the odds.

If the chance you were going to need to draw your gun today was %100, you'd just stay in bed. Play the odds as best you see them. It's a fact that the vast majority of incidents don't require more than a few rounds, but some encounters most certainly do...and will. Roll the dice. Nobody here is going to be able to say to Mylhouse "don't sweat the reload, you won't need it". Someday he just might, but is it worth the expense and aggravation to prepare for the remote possibility? Personal decision, IMHO. Make an educated gamble. Are you in a high-risk situation? What's the weather in your area? If you're carrying anything, you're ahead of the curve already.
