A little help from Northern Californians

If it would save you some time and gas, try shopping in Vacaville, visit Frank at Guns and Gear in Alamo Square just of Hwy 80 -- west. He is an ex C141 Flight Engineer. Also recommend River City. I read last week that Great Guns in Sac was fined 1/2 million and lost the FFL for having a couple Rugers possibly altered??????

Any previous experience with guns? Just curious, because are you sure that what you want? Nothing against Glocks or Sigs, both high quality great guns.

Mrblond,

Cool name by the way, Reservoir dogs is a great movie.

Well anyways getting back to your question, why glock or sig? Well those are the only types of pistols I've shot. Lets see a G17c, G19, G33 and Sig 229 .357. I really liked the sig but the .357 is too expensive (although fun and accurate) of a round for my budget so I'm going with a 9mm.

Not that I'm forgoing the possibility of buying other brands, I like those two and I've got to start somewhere, right? :-)

BTW, thanks to all those you've replied, it's been very helpful.

I remembered another shop that might be worth a look. I think its called "Buy-Sell-Trade." Its a pawn shop in a strip mall near Fruitridge and (I think) Stockton. I haven't bought any guns there, but I've looked frequently and seen some decent deals (they had a new Walther P99 .40 awhile back on sale for $539 I think). They seem like friendly folks. I often hit both River City and Buy-Sell-Trade in the same trip (they are only about 5 minutes apart).

Victor,

I used to go to the Magnum Park range. I think I spelled it wrong. It's been a while though. Great Guns is in a lot of legal trouble...stay away from them. The "Gun Room" in Elk Grove is a good place. You want to talk to Jeff.

Sea Bass,
I've never been too fond of Great Guns, but the fact that they are in a lot of legal trouble doesn't make me want to stay away from them - especially for things I can pay for and walk out with (I might be slighly nervous about them having assets seized during a waiting period or something, but I doubt the government could seize the legally purchased property of a customer).

As I understand it, they got in trouble for installing folding stocks on two Ruger 10/22 rifles, thus (per California law) creating "assault weapons." Mind you, it was (and is) legal to sell 10/22s, and folding stocks for 10/22's, you just can't put them together.

Now, what was the penalty for this terrible offense? A $500,000 fine. That's right. 1/2 million bucks for installing folding stocks on a couple of .22s. I don't know why they did it (pretty stupid), but it still seems like the fine is excessive - obviously intended to put one of the area's biggest gun and sporting goods stores out of business. Isn't the punishment supposed to fit the crime? I hope they can recover from it. They are open again after being closed for a couple of months - although they still aren't selling guns (just accessories).

Chink,

Traders is safe in saying it will meet other prices as most have pretty much the same 'street' prices. When I bought my 686+ for $395 Traders and everyone else was asking about $445 or so.

Famous last words....

Sea Bass,

It's been awhile for me as well. I only went once, and I was probably around 12 years old (8 years ago). Last I heard they were only open a few days a week. I would like to take a friend out to a range when I get home for summer break in about a week from AZ, and an indoor one would be nice.
