A little help from Northern Californians

I'm looking to buy my first handgun in the next few months. I'm trying to see if there are any good local dealers in the greater Vacaville/Davis/Sacramento area. I'm looking for places that sell either Sigs or Glocks at a reasonable price. (I'm looking to get either a glock 17/19 or Sig compact or fullsize in 9mm)

Or any FFl's that have a reasonable charge on their fee's, like less than 30 including DROS fees.

thanks,

~bamf

Wild Sports in Sac usually has better than average prices and a good selection, including Glocks and a few Sigs. The only problem is convincing them to sell you a gun. I'm military stationed here, and they won't sell to me because I don't have a CA driver's license or car registration. Even if you have a CA license and you've moved since you got it, they won't sell to you because you don't have official government verification of your current address. They won't accept a government document like a W-2, but I've heard they will take a handwritten pass from a city-run swimming pool. By the way, they also sell cap and ball pistols - they have the $400 colts on display, but the $100 replicas are in back and they won't sell them because they're not sure what the law is.
Other than Wild Sports, there's not much to choose from. I think Great Guns is still closed down, there's a place downtown but I have no info on it. If you want used, you could try J&G gunsmith in Roseville. Limited selection, but good prices and they're good guys.

If you're willing to drive a little farther south to Reed's Sport Shop in San Jose, they have an awesome selection from all the manufacturers at reasonable prices. Best selection I've seen anywhere.

If you go a lil' further south you have the traders in San Leandro/Oakland or Target masters in Milpitas. I believe there is a targetmasters in Stockton too but you'll have to check. All theaforementioned dealers have a good selection at a reasonable price.

You should check out River City Gun Exchange. Last time I was there they seemed to have a pretty good selection, and they are really nice folks. I'm not familiar with pricing on Glocks so I couldn't tell you how theirs stacks against others. Their number is (916) 428-0377. I was told they had some police trade in Glock .40's for $399 back a bit...might be worth checking out. I believe the place Deguello was talking about is the Old Sacramento Armoury Inc, and their number is (916) 446-7079.

Didn't Branden's indoor range go out of business? I also have to recommend River City Gun Exchange. I have done business with them and they are very nice people. Prices are reasonable. Talk to Don.

Hopes this helps :-)

Brandons is history. About 2 years now. I had heard they were trying to reopen somewhere in elk grove, but where having the typical "you want to put what where? HA HA HA HA" problem.

River City Gun Exchange has had 17,19,22,23's for around $400. They are factory refurbs but since this is Ca. no highcaps. Never done business with them though. Fairly rough part of town.

Great Guns is open but they have no guns and only about 1/3 their normal inventory. Lots of legal trouble from a couple of Mini14s they had on the shelf that were questionably leagal.

Wild Sports has the best selection but they dont deal and they are not the kind of guys you dont mind seeing a few extra bucks go to. Rancho Cordova guns usually carries a few glocks. They are on Sunrise just north of 50. There is also a store down in Elk Grove but I cannot remember the name. They generally have a good selection and seem real friendly.

Old Sac Armory seem like good guys but their selection is spotty. Course everyones selection of glocks is spotty right now.

Good Luck

I will suggested Traders out in San Leandro. good place with a lot of good people and a lot more guns. you name it they've got it. Its where I've gotten my last couple guns and where I get all my ammo, even though it is a little bit of a drive from the San Jose Area.

Bullwinkle,

River City is in kind of a sketchy place, but during regular business hours I haven't worried about it. I have friends from high school that lived in the area (one was actually about 10 yards from the store) and at night it was not my idea of a safe and secure environment.

Also does anyone know if the pistol range in Magnum Park is still open? It's the park between River City Gun Exchange and Executive Airport.

I'd also recommend River City Gun Exchange. Granted, its not in a great neighborhood, but I never feel nervous about going there. And the guys in the store are very friendly and helpful. Their prices vary, but they do have some good buys from time to time. I recently bought a new Kel-tec P32 from them on sale for $239.95.

I also know an FFL who will order for $30 over his cost. E-mail me and I'll forward your message to him (I don't want to post his name and e-mail without his permission). I've bought several guns through him and he's a good guy.

I'm sure there are some good dealers in the Sacto area, but I second the comment about Reed's Sport Shop in San Jose. Very good selection and decent prices. They often have many models on sale.

I bought several guns from Antioch Armory 712 West 2nd street 925-706-1442 after calling around. Nice owner runs operation and prices are very fair, especially if used guns come in. But Target masters in Milpitas and Reeds in San Jose have been good too.

bamf, siggy and chink,

There is indeed a Targetmasters in Stockton as well as Milpitas. They used to have great selection and prices, but have changed management in the Milpitas store at least. Some prices are good in Milpitas and may be better in Stockton. Selection is very much slimmed down in Milpitas where I bought my S&W 686+ two years ago for $50 less than anyone else.

Traders in San Leandro has a very good selection, but their red tag prices are just mediocre for the market. No deals. Sometimes annoying to have to plow through the gang bangers checking out Tech 9s to get to the counter.

I'll plug River City Gun Exchange.
Talk to Don, really nice guy who is into guns. Tell him Hayden(the pilot) says hello.
He probably is wondering where I am I moved to TN 4 months ago.
I purchased my first handgun from them and after some pre and post buy research I got a great deal. They seem to stock alot of ex-duty guns.

They also usually have very competive prices on ammo(bulk buy).

good luck........

Guy,

I completely agree with you about the selection at TargetMasters in Milpitas. I never really checked the prices of the pistols there though, because when I have gone in the past, I wasn't in the market for a nre pistol, so I didn't really look hard.

Hey, I think i'm one of the gangbangers looking at the tec-9s. Well, at least I sometime dress the part. Trader is busleing with peoplem most of the time. They claim they will meet competetors prices. In know they dropped the advertised price on their BM lowers when the day after their add came out, NSC advertised BM lowers for less.

But there really aren't any good deals to be had within 1 hour of san Jose that I know of, of course, I haven't looked realy hard, because the firearms I buy i always buy on impulse.

If it would save you some time and gas, try shopping in Vacaville, visit Frank at Guns and Gear in Alamo Square just of Hwy 80 -- west. He is an ex C141 Flight Engineer. Also recommend River City. I read last week that Great Guns in Sac was fined 1/2 million and lost the FFL for having a couple Rugers possibly altered??????
