A lesson learned!

I guarantee that a compact 22 isn't going to bounce off wood at anything near self defense ranges. And no, I'm not an advocate of using a 22 for self defense but I know better than to underestimate it.
 
It would surely depend on the wood.

I worked on a hydo-electric dam crew rebuilding impeller shafts that had been in place since the 1880's. The soaked and age hardened Brazilian Teak that was used for the bearings might have deflected a .308!
