A hypothetical question your in MR. GRIZZ
Backyard the bear pick up your sent and now
It chasing you down! At 50 yard line you see a table
With 3 rifles all loaded you can just pick 1.

1 45/70
2 444
3 450

Pick pick wisely the bear almost on ya!.

Unfortunately the 3 choice seem to reflect only Marlin 336 varient rifles. I have a number of these and really like them but they are far from reliable firearms. That being said you probably only have time for 2 or 3 shots and any of these will down a bear IF the head or spine is hit.

A Hypothetical Answer

When a possible correlation or similar relation between phenomena is investigated, the hypothesis that a relation exists cannot be examined the same way one might examine a proposed new law of nature: statistical tests are used to determine how likely it is that the overall effect would be observed if no real relation as hypothesized exists. If that likelihood is sufficiently small (e.g., less than 1%), the existence of a relation may be assumed. Otherwise, any observed effect may as well be due to pure chance......... OK?

Never having fired any of the choices, I would give either the 45/70 or 450 a try. Not knowing what ammo is loaded in the rifles , I would lean toward the 450 since it's more likely to carry a good penetrating bullet.

Jack,

You're hypo question doesn't make sense to me. Is the table where I stand? Or do I have to run 50 yards to the table? If it's the later, then it depends how far Mr. G is away from me. And I thought that you're suppose to stand if a bear charge instead of run.

It must be late....

Hog Buster-- You don't sound like no hog buster I know. Dang man, you have some sweet grammar. I had to get my "English Grammer for Dummy Rednecks" out to translate what you wrote. All I can say is........THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL.:D

The three rounds listed are so similar that this is a pretty pointless exercise. Even sedate low pressure 45/70 rounds will hit like a flying anvil at that range.

??? none of the above will enable me to put a bullet into the bear or myself after a 50 yard race. I would hate to have to suffer through an entire mauling:D If i don't have to race the bear to the table then the 450.:) Can I please wear my 454 casull on my side as well? Bears that are mad don't always die easily.

This situation is a perfect example of why you should never go into bear country alone. ALWAYS make sure you have a buddy with you that you can out run.

I think Hog Buster wins!:D

I also think Jack should spend less time dreaming and more time in the field. Ambush predators typically attack from very short distances, often the prey have little or no time to react. A grizzly bear sprinting at 35 mph is covering 51 feet per second. Unless you are standing right next to the table and the bear breaks cover at 50+ yards, he/she will be on you in less time than it takes to look at the rifles, decide what each may be chambered for, pick up the rifle, and put it to use.

I left out the part about messing yourself and screaming like a girl, there will be plenty of time for that after the bear grabs hold of you. Google Timothy Treadwell.
