A gun in every room?

After some recent tragic events on the news, I buddy of mine and I got to talking about guns and home protection. I have to first of all tell you that my buddy is a hard core self survivalist. We got to discussing how many guns we have in our house at an arms reach. He was saying that he has a pistol/rifle/or shotgun in every room of his house loaded in case he needs it. He keeps a pistol in the kitchen, a pistol in the livingroom, a shotgun in the bathroom, and an AK in his bedroom. I am NOT trying to get a "what is best for home defense" debate going, I am just wandering what everyones thoughts are on this subject. Once I got to thinking about it, it really doesn't sound like a bad idea, but I don't know if it is a little too much. I also thought about leaving a loaded mag for my favorite home defense gun in every room just in case. Obviously, this would not apply for people with small children, just wandering what you guys think about this.

Keeping a gun in every room...

... especially a loaded gun in every room, is a recipe for anything from a social faux pas (when guests happen into one) to disaster (when the guest is a child) to theft (increased odds of a burglar finding one).

It's much simpler, safer, and quicker to keep a weapon on one's person.

The others should be in the safe, in general, IMO, although I do keep a shotgun in the bedroom when I'm home. (No kids).

I have known people to stash guns in more than one place, like one on the bedstand, and another in a hollow book in the bookcase, etc. Not in every room. Read a parody in a Mall Ninja magazine years ago, about some guy describing his guns all over the place, including the rig he wore into the shower. :D

Easier and considerably safer just to wear the darn thing while dressed, and keep it readily available behind a locked bedroom door at night.

Yep, it's a horrendous idea. I can't think of any scenario where it would EVER be a good idea, for any reason, in any instance, for anyone.

Carry one on your person. Make your safe accessible if you need to get to it for more capable weapons.

If you are expecting the kind of trouble that requires or even suggests a firearm ready in every room... you'd have to be a complete fool for staying there.

There are numerous problems with the idea of keeping a gun in every room, but the single biggest problem that I have with it above all others is the idea that someone who breaks in to the home has access to it. I would never put my own firearms in a place where they can be taken and used against me or my family.

if it was ww3 i think the idea a a gun in every room in case of an intruder is still a really bad idea. if one of the sneaky little bastards gets in a room that you are not in they can use the gun against you. now if you say it would be hidden, duh guess what the bad guy is doing....looking for vauables. i would rather have the gun on me....then it is in every room i am in.

This is one of those things that sounds horrible on the surface, is usually executed in a horrendous manner by common folk, and can be superb if approached in the correct manner. I can't really go into details, but suffice to say that you use your head, and it amounts to a lot more than leanin a SG in every corner. It doesn't have to be in every room, but it does have to be done in such a manner that friends with kids can come over and you don't have to go on a weapons roundup so they can come in the house, if that suggests anything...

Edward...

... unless you have pistol safes secreted throughout the house, if your friend's kids aren't finding the stashed guns, they aren't creative enough.

Kids find everything. It's their job.

I have a gun safe and I have several guns also located around the house. I also have a concealed carry permit so most of the time I have one on me. I have no kids at home and when they visit the guns go in the safe except for my carry gun.

I have these magnetic holders I bought at the Tulsa Gun show that allow them to be under tables and in closets, etc. They work great and the guns are fairlty well hidden.

I have a girlfriend that lives with me and at night if I hear someone in the house and I reach over and she's in bed with me someone is going to be leaking fairly soon.

Its not a practice I care for. Besides, I do not feel inclined to keep track of/be held accountable for so many loaded weapons. Personally, I think that one handgun on my person, one handgun in the bedroom, along with a shotgun (wherever I may put it), is more than enough for my needs.

Of course, I must comment on those who worry about intruders gaining access to such stored weapons...Do you honestly believe that any seasoned criminal/thief would not automatically assume most, if not all, firearms are kept in the bedroom or bedroom closet? If you can safely secure/hide your weapons in every room (preferably in a safe when not at home or if you have children), then go for it.

But, again, I do not necessarily condone the idea as its just too much to keep track of; and having to keep track of too many loaded weapons is just an invitation to disaster.

Thanks for all the input. I kinda thought it was a little much myself. I just didn't know if I was alone in my thinking. Just for the record, this guy is long past the point of having kids in the house. I like the magnets that allow you to place a gun under a night stand/end table/kitchen table. I does seem to be a bit of a liablility. We are in a state that does not allow concealed carry, so it is not a common practice to have a gun on our side. Maybe one day. Thanks again for the input!

This is unfortunate. However, does this "law" prohibit you from keeping a weapon on your person while within the home? I doubt it. So, consider this as an alternative. I know several individuals who always keep a gun strapped to themselves while at home (no CC license necessary).

I wouldnt keep one in every room. I do keep one in the night stand if its not on my hip and a shot gun in the bed room too. I feel that fits my needs just fine.

I don't have one in every room but I do have them located in two rooms such that I am never far from one where ever I am in the house. And they are positioned such that I don't have to worry when my friends bring their young children. And also if I have my pants on, there is one in my pocket.

As a side note- If you have children about, Ill offer this suggestion: Keep a loaded handgun on your person at all times (during the day) and a loaded shotgun in the bedroom closet, inside of an electronic keypad equipped safe (and keep those batteries current!). Simple enough? Yes. Secure enough? Yes. Effective enough? Yes.

When it comes to sleepy time, well....you take it from there.

Carry one with him?

One shotgun and one pistol in bedroom. One gun on hip or in pocket. All others in gun safe. If someone comes over I put bedroom guns in the safe.
