my mother surprised me and my father yesterday she walked in and said hey guess what i got? i was like wat i figured it was a new braclet or neckless and i be darned if it wasnt a carry permit. she whent and did all the stuff without telling me or my father me and my dad looked at each other in the eyes and said New Gun! at the same time. my mother isnt ur average woman. shes not one of those gi janes shes more of the prepy types. but lord she can shoot a 12 gauge and .45's! but she dont wont a .45 she wants sumthing that can go into her pocket or her pocket book. were thinkin a .380. maybe a snub nose .38 or .357. a .32 maybe? .25s possible if shes packin glazer safetys slugs. but this will be the last choice. or maybe a real compact 9mm. im not saying im going to get her a hi point 9mm im just saying sumthing the size of there compact model would be good. and the price needs to be under 400$ so wat do u recomend?

Good for her, it's always a good thing to see people take their safety into their own hands, especially a close relative.

Take a look at some of these

Ruger LCP - .380 acp - $350ish
S&W 642 - .38 spl+p - $400ish
Walther PPK/S - .25acp/.32acp/.380acp - $500ish, a good used one might be cheaper
Taurus has some 'decent' compacts in the $400 range, I'm not a fan of them personally, but this will be a choice she'll have to make...
Glock 26 - 9mm - $500ish, a good used one can be had around $400

If it were me, I'd choose the Glock or the S&W as a close second... (A great Mother's Day present would be a set of Crimson Trace laser grips for whatever gun she chooses, depending on her age she might not be able to see standard sights all that well in the years to come.)

I'm sure that others will be able to help you more than I, but I figured I'd throw a few out there...

The best way to determine a CCW would be to take her to the range and rent a few guns, that way she can decide for herself what she likes and you won't run the risk of picking out something she can't shoot... The best bet is to let her choose. Put a few suggestions out there, but let the decision be hers.

Best of luck.

While we await Pax, I have three recommendations:

1. Let your Mom choose the handgun.
2. Let your Mom choose the handgun.
3. Let your Mom choose the handgun.

Two bits against Sunday she already has some ideas of her own. After all, she's the one who got the permit!

Cordially, Jack

The "best" gun is the one YOU like, not anyone else. It will be a compromise of:

1. Fit - It should fit in your hand like you were born with it there.
2. Reliability - It should go BANG about 99.8% of the time you pull the trigger.
3. Accuracy - In YOUR hand. It's how well YOU shoot it.
4. Concealability - It should be comfortable enough to wear and easy enough to conceal so you won't leave it laying on the dresser at home.
5. Cost - You don't want to scrimp on your "life protector" weapon, but you probably don't need a $1,000 Kimber, either.

1. Let your Mom choose the handgun.

+1!

2. Bersa Thunder .380 or 9mm.
3. Any of the Keltecs mentioned above. I don't own nor have I shot any, but I've heard nothing but good things about them.
4. A .38 SPL or other small revolver.

Except for no. 1 these are in no particular order. My wife carries a Bersa Thunder and we've never had any problems with it. In fact it's the most accurate of all 10 handguns we own. I'm no marksman by anymeans, but the bullet hits EXACTLY where I aim with that gun.

Good luck and tell your mom congrats!

Congrats to your mom having the initiative to get a carry permit on her own.

She's probably got the initiative to do her own choosing, too. Send her here to ask about it.

Let your Mom choose the handgun.

Look into the following pieces, small guns without significant recoil:

Kahr CW-series (9mm, 40S&W)
Ruger SP 101 with 2 1/4" Barrel .38
Walther PPS (9 OR 40) or P22
XD9, 40 compact
Glock 26 with pinky extension
S&W 642 Revolver .38

Your mom has to make the call, female shooters can be picky on the selection processes, but once they find the one -- they are amazing shooters!
Congrats!

Yes, let your mom choose. Have her go to a shooting range and see what they have for rentals. Have her look at compact guns that friends own. See if there are any shooting clubs she can join, or at least shooting classes, and see if she can test guns that way. At the very least, go to a few gun shops so she can handle a few.

If it helps, the only concealable gun my wife has ever expressed interest in is a Smith model 36. She says it reminds her of the ones detectives use in old black & white movies.

Your mom might like choosing her own grips, too. If she goes with a revolver she'll have a lot more choices than an automatic.

Take her to shops and let her pick up and handle every single gun there. I did that with my mom and she settled with an SP101. She loves it because it fits her.

Bersa

Get her a Bersa Thunder .380. snakeriverarms.com has one for $279.95 it's new and they had one in stock last week. The Bersa has an exposed hammer, SA/DA. A very nice pistol for a lady. The only problem is that the Bersa line is hard to find, when they release them they tend to sell out quickly.

Actually (until a couple weeks ago), I was in the exact same boat as you, bamafan. That's when I found a S&W 642 at a gun show (at a good but not great price), called my dad and 15 min. later we were leaving the gun show. About 30 min. later she was happy as can be. She still hasn't shot it yet though....:(

Kahr 9 mm or Bersa pistol in .380 or 9 mm. Both types are small guns that she will probably love to carry in her purse or in a pocket.
