A couple of HD Shotgun options -- Input?

Between the two, I'd opt for the Mossberg 500. Since the dealer didn't include an R-870 in the selection, it might tell you something of his opinion of the M-500 vs. R-870.

It's really great that there is so much after market stuff for the Mossberg BUT only if you need it...Great that you can spend hundreds of dollars making it into a Mall Ninja's wet dream!

Other then a barrel light what more does he and his wife need for a HD gun and the $45 difference between the two indicated may well buy the light or lots of ammo to practice with...

Butt cuffs, sidesaddles, slings, RedDot or ghost ring sights are luxuries not necessities and if you look carefully you'll see that the Charles Daly already comes with sights (another $50 difference)...

My Mossberg 500 came with a sling, but granted it's the field model, not the persuader. But I would assume it should come with the sling from the factory, but maybe not from his particular dealer. Also, although a side saddle is not "necessary" I would recommend it because as he said the gun will sit behind a door until the opportunity to shoot an intruder arises. This way you can keep ammo on the gun and close by. Also, the Charles Daly looks to me to have rifle sights, and the Mossberg does have a sight too, a single bead sight on the end of the barrel. It's a shotgun, point and shoot to kill, with bird or buck shot for HD, I assume he's not going to be taking long range shots with slugs.
