A better AR front sight ???

The look OK, I would give one a try, but is this intended to be a taget or combat sight?

The only reason I ask is because of the hood, looks like it could get caught on gear or brush. I am all for any sight that helps me put lead on target more effectively. Perhaps an AK style hood (a complete circle with a hole in the top to access the front sight for adjustment) would cure that issue?

Thats just my opinion, may not be seen as a problem by others. All told I think your on the right track! keep it up...Every innovation started with an idea...

And to Chadio
That group @ 100 yds freehand rapid w/ peep sights - I'd have to see it to believe it.

I don't suck at shooting rifles. I may be a poor shot campared to you. But... your "100 yd peep sight " photo above is bull****. Most bench / scope guys can't do that group. The internet is a great place to tell lies.

The group Kraig shared is a great group for the position he stated, but is in no way impossible to achieve. It is better than the average shooter could do, but it actually makes me laugh that you call B/S on that. Kraig is obviously an experienced shooter and highly familiar with the platform, and one with his experience would consider this above average but not bragging rights. I have a fair amount of skill and accuracy, and have shot groups like that a few times from that position, I consider them brag worthy.

Before you go calling people liars, maybe you should get out of the chair, leave the beer at home and go make some friends at the range who know what they are doing. Maybe then you will have a true Idea of what can be accomplished by a marksman and his rifle....

The bashing of a distinguished marksman, just goes to show how ignorant you are.

Kraigwy-from what I do know about him here on the forum-is an excellent shot with service rifles.

After this.

I have been a competition shooter for many years now. Today I shoot smallbore three position and dewer matches and NRA highpower.

NONE of the matches I attend will allow you to use a scope or a bench.

IF you know how to shoot the rapid fire group in question is no longer that impressive.

Not taking anything away for the shooter he is a really good one.

Most likely better than me but my point is his group while impressive to many is not uncommon with competition shooters.

Now what I mean by "knowing how to shoot" is not what you can do on a bench. It is how you can do WITHOUT a bench.

A good shooter can shoot better groups from prone with a sling with iron sights than a lot of people can with a scope, bench and sandbags.

If I had a dime for every bench only shooter who does not believe this I could take off work for a year or two.

I have been called a liar many times but when we have rifle matches at our local club none of these people will show up so I can prove them wrong.

The things I have seen the really good shooters do at the 100 yard smallbore prone matches are amazing. A good prone smallbore shooter can and will shoot half to 3/4 minute size groups and that is doing it for 20 rounds.

Olympic class shooters can do even better.

Years ago an old Marine, a Korea Vet, who shot on the USMC team for years taught me the basics of being a rifleman.

I had been shooting all my life but I was sort of like this one poster in question here I knew nothing about real shooting.

He taught me more in one day than I had learned all my life on my own and being "coached" by so called experts and Fathers and Uncles and the like.

I shot smallbore and highpower in reduced course matches for a while and I shot my first full course highpower match at Ft Knox Ky.

I had seen some good shooting before but I was amazed the first time I worked the pits at a full course match.

A 16 year old Jr shooter shot a 199 on the 300 yard line rapid prone. A 99 on the first string and he cleaned the second. If I remember the ten ring on the 300 yard target is about 6 inches. So in the second string he shot at least a 6 inch group possibly smaller I don't remember. With a iron sighted AR at 300 yards in 70 seconds going from standing into prone with a mag change.

I saw the good shooters shoot almost perfect scores on the 600 yard line. I remember one lady in paticular who shot a 198 14X.

If I remember correctly the 600 yard ten ring is about 12 inches and the X is 6 meaning she put 14 out of her 20 into a 6 inch circle and 18 of her 20 went into 12 inches. The two 9s she shot were just barely out of the ten ring so her 20 shot 600 yard group was about 13 inches or so.

Since then I have seen these targets cleaned at all ranges.

But long ago I was once ignorant and I might have called Kraig a liar also.

Someone once told me it was not a sin to be ignorant but it is a sin to chose the remain that way.

Everyone needs to settle down, I have spouted off and it was without merit. I apologize if I offended anyone. I hope to learn from others especially kraigwy.

I can shoot that group, standing freehand, with my very basic AR15 but at a closer distance. To do that @ 100, with much more training, much more experience and much more rifle, should not be so unimaginable as to set off my 'bs meter' ...... but that day (I read his post) , it did.

BTW - just bought the book "The Complete Guide to AR-15 Accuracy" Derrick Martin & Barrett Tillman - much more to the craft than the average Joe might imagine.

BTW - I'm not a bench shooter. Stand / sit / prone with peeps all the way. Cut my teeth with the M14 in the Navy '89 thru '93.
