A basic scope for 300 win mag.

Lloyd, it isn't on there web site yet because I imagine that they are waiting until after the SHOT show this week. I only found out about them because of the new Cabela's shooting catalog. Here is a link to the new VX-2 scope and the VX-1 scope.

Plus don't you find it strange that SWFA that usually has 4 pages of VX-II scopes is only down to one? I hope that helps clear it up for you. I agree it is about time that Leupold passed the tech on down, it is good to see that they are are updating with the release of the new VX-R and VX-6 lines as well.

I have a lot more cash saved up... the problem is the woman doesnt want to see more than 100 on the receipt because we're payin for a wedding. her price cap not mine(she also put me on a gun buyin freeze until after the july wedding). that being said i went with the vortex. i've heard they can fall apart but its for a paper puncher and if they keep on sending them my way as i break them, its fine with me.

I understand the situation you are going through, as I did the same thing just over a year ago when I got married. My wife and I made a deal early on that I wouldn't put us in debt buying my shooting stuff, and she wouldn't restrict what I bought or question me about it. I let her know as a courtsey that I'm going to buy things, and we discuss what bills we have to pay before I make the purchase. If I were you I would strike a similar deal with your future wife if you can.

I know that Vortex will take care of your scope under thier warranty, but it will cost you about $10 to send it in every time it breaks. So if it fails under the recoil of the .300 WM three to four times you might as well have bought a better scope. That is just a lot more hassle than I want to go through just to keep shooting, plus the ammunition you'll have to shoot just to re-zero the rifle before you can start target shooting again especially if you are trying long range. I hope that the scope holds up for you as long as you use it.

Best wishes to you and your fiance on your upcoming wedding.

dos centavos.

If you want a cheap scope get a Center Point 4-16x40 w/ Illuminated red or green mildot reticle. Says they're tested to a .416 Rigby. I have one on my .22-250 for right now and I like it. you can get them at Wal-mart for $70.

Did you say that the Leupold VX 11 3X9X40 has been discontinued ? If so thats terrible, thats my favorite hunting scope !!!

I cant think of any for less than a benny that wont break from recoil. for about 150-ish you could get a nikon prostaff. I have 3 of them and one is mounted on a 300 weatherby mag so I will guarantee that it'll stand up to the recoil of a 300 win mag.

Don't worry you'll be able to but the new VX-2 in 3-9X40 and if you want a scope similar to your VX-II you can look to the new VX-1. Leupold has a tendancy to push down tech as they upgrade there top end lines. When the VX-III went to the VX-3 it was only a matter of time before it happened. If you click on the links in my previous post you'll see the upgrades.

Thanks Talorice

I am glad I will still be able to get this scope, I like mine so much, I bought one for my Father In Law for Christmas. I was disapointed that I was unable to get one in gloss finish, but it was still a nice scope.
To me its the perfect blend of form and function, and holds its setting like a vise grip.:)

A $100 scope on a 300 mag might not last a full box of ammo. You really need a decent scope. The more expensive scopes are better, but you don't need to spend a fortune. $200 will buy a scope that will work just fine. A $200 scope will probably be about 500% better than a $100 scope, but a $400 scope may only be about 10% better than a $200 scope. The more expensive scopes are better, but most folks will never notice the difference.

Very wise words.

I put a cheap tasco on an older Ruger 7mm mag. After 3 shots the cross hairs were gone.

I think $100 is too cheap. Step up to a $200 scope and you will have a scope that will last you for years.

If your limited to a cheap scope i would look for a fixed power, it should hold up longer than a variable on your hard kicking rifle.
