A basic scope for 300 win mag.

I'm looking for a scope that will hold up to the recoil of my 300 win mag. I dont need anything spectacular. just something tough. Just had the first scope which came with the rifle break (it was a cheesy tasco). I'd like to keep the price below 100 and have magnification up to 12x. I know i'm not going to have the best clarity, but its just for punching paper for the moment. (the woman price capped me until after the wedding)

If you only have $100 for it, look used. El Paso Weavers can be had inexpensively. If you put a cheap scope on it the .300 will just rattle it to pieces and you'll end up buying another one anyways.

I know. It's a pain in the ass not to be able to even step up to a vortex. I'm really sold on the 12 power though. at the ranges i've been shooting lately i need the extra magnification for target ID(If i could get a tough enough 24x i would).

I just picked up a pentax 3x9-40 for under 100 bucks for my .22. I have a vortex in 4x12-40 on my .308 and its a damn good scope i paid $200 for it. For under 100 bucks a bushnell may be the best bet.

I would wait until you can afford a good one unless you can find one used. Even your Lower end Bushnells and other scopes in the 100-150 range can have issues with high recoil. You may find a cheap one works, or you may ruin a cheap scope and end up buying a good one anyway. Just my two cents. Hope you can come off that budget soon haha :)

IMHO if you put a $100 scope on your $600 rifle, it will never perform like a $600 rifle. I would hold off buying a scope until you can spend atleast $250. Don't get cheap base/rings either. The rifle, base, rings and scope all have to work as a single system and the system is only as good as the weakest component.

yeah, i wish the budget weren't so stringent myself. whatever I buy now will end up on my spare rifle in the fall when I buy a new scope. the poor little tasco didnt even know what hit it lol. took a big ol' chunk out of one of the inner lenses.

I have two vortex scopes and one is on my 300 win mag. It is about 160 new. Vortex has a lifetime no fault warranty.

My 308 has the crossfire and the 300 has the one with a red dot that you can turn on and off. It has cross hairs as well. When the red dot is off there is a black dot. So far it is my favorite scope.

I'd worry about eye relief more than durability. A tough as nails high-end scope will crack you in the face just as easy as a lesser one, trust me! Go with a Leupold or Sightron SIII.
