"A Balanced Perspective"- America is not a police state

To some extent our rhetorical hyperbole does trivialize the horrendous conditions in truly totalitarian regimes, past and present. And I can see how this would really annoy someone like Mr Nyquist who spends a lot of time studying totalitarian regimes.

I agree we are a fairly long way yet from being as bad as China. We can also cover the distance in less than 5 years under the right (or worst) circumstances.

We are neither really free nor really a police state -- yet. So long as you're white and dress and groom yourself conservatively. For some folks we've been a "police state" for a long time.

At this point America is far from being a police state, depending on ones definitions. The peace love crowd might disagree. It can be said that most countries that fit our current definition of "police state" existed as something else prior to meeting that definition. It is important to recognize what the conditions are that lead to being defined as a "police state" (as defined in E Germany, China, Or USSR) so that something can be done before it is too far along. It appears to me that conditions favorable to a "police state" are much more prevalent in America now than at any time in the recent past.
