My first suggestion is comfort! Get a gun that fits your hand and feels good. Nothing feels better than a 1911, though! I too have average hands and the Glock is too big for my hands. You can always spend the money on a stock one now and do upgrades later by sending it to a gunsmith to customize it to your feel and needs! I have a custom 1911 stainless with the works done(overall about $1700, including the price of the pistol) and its my favorite pistol and a beautiful gun at that!
If you look at anyone in competitive shooting, they all have 1911 style firearms! Might tell you something!
If you don't want a SA or don't like the 1911, then I would recommend the HK USP! I bought one for an on duty weapon and love it! I have never had any malfunctions or jams and it is really accurate. Most of the SWAT guys are switching from the SIG 220 to the HK for durability, reliability and believe it or not accuracy! The HK has a better quality finish on it than the SIG as well. The SIG is a nice gun though and I would recommend it as well, beware of the aluminum frames though.
