a .45

I don't really need any more pistols, but I would kind of like something in .45 caliber. I have plenty of small carry guns, so a full size would be OK. I guess it would mainly be for target shooting, though I would like to get into competition shooting. I also want it to look cool! I have pistols in .40, 9 mm, .32, and .38 now, so I've been a little reluctant to add another caliber, but now the fever is strong!

The Ruger and Glock .45s seem a little thick in the grip for me. I'm fairly tall but have average to small hands.

I don't want to spend three thousand dollars, but a little accuracy and reliability would be nice.

Any recommendations?

I'm like you, don't need any more pistols, but always wanted .45. Anyway, check out
CZ-97B, it's cool looking, accurate and reliable, and priced under $500. It's 10 rounder, with very good DA pull and good enough SA. All steel, relatively big and heavy, which is good for shooting .45 ACP load, no "limp wristling" problem with this one... Easy to control in rapid fire. Extra magazines are under $30, BTW. I'm very happy with this pistol.

Give the Ruger a try (and the Glock too). I have small to medium size hands and these are the two .45's I shoot the best ;)
Both get exceptional groups with mild recoil!

Ruger P97
Glock 21

You cant go wrong with either of these. You can also give the Sig P220 a chance, but I think that is rather thick too. All I can say is don't discount a fine pistol due to width (without at least trying one first).

I'll second the CZ97. That or a Springfield Milspec. Both cost anywhere from $450-$500 new and are top notch.

By the way, if your only going to have one .45, it is your duty as an American to make it a 1911.

RHC, I sort of found myself in the same predicament. I have a Remington Rand .45 that I really don't want to shoot to much anymore. So I wanted another .45 to shoot. I got a good deal on a used S&W CS.45 which is a compact .45 That still didn't satisfy my need, I wanted another 1911. So I looked and found the Springfield Loaded. Didn't want to spend alot of money either $1000 + . So I bought a Springfield Loaded V12. Nice gun, seems very well built, fit and finish is excellent in my opinion. I really liked it and thought the price was reasonable for what I was getting. Haven't had it to the range yet but that is going to happen sometime real soon. But all in all I believe for the money you can't beat them ;)
Hope this helps :)

Happy Shooting :)

A SA 1911 gov't model will run you around $500 and up, depending on the options you prefer. They are great pistols. For a little more, the Kimbers are nicely fnished. You want a .45acp? The 1911 is THE .45acp. :D

Baby Eagle in .45 is a real sleeper. I have small hands and it was a pleasure to shoot. Very accurate and a steal at under $400.

The only way to really tell what fits your hand is to go to a GUNSHOP and try them all. Most salesman will have no problem letting you try the guns for fit if they think you are really gonna buy one.

I have done that for numerous guns, I read about them , figure out about what I want and then I try them. On several occasions my mind has been changed by the fit and feel. I once wanted a Ruger Redhawke in .44 mag, I tried it and a Colt Ananconda went home with me. Fact is...you'll never know till you pick one up. If you are gonna spend the money get what you want up front, dont buy somthing and wish later on that you had something else. I recently shot a friends HK USP .45 and liked it so much I cannot live without one...thus my next endeavor.

So ..good luck. Be a smart shopper.Be happy with your gun .

You owe it to yourself to own at least one 1911 in 45 ACP. Get a Springfield Mil-Spec and the addiction will grow from there =) The CZ97 is not a bad choice either and may end up in my gun safe soon.

As a hardcore HK fan it is hard for me to say this but you need a 1911 .45 in your collection!!!
Everyone should have at least one.

RHC,

I already own a Glock G30 (and love it), shoots super accurate and not one jam in 1000 rounds!

I was considering a Wilson, Les Baer or Kimber but decided on a Ruger P97D and a Magnum Research Baby Eagle. Excellent value for the dollar.

The little eagle is a bit on the heavy side but points very well. The P97D is nice and light and also points well.

How about a Glock 36? It is the single stack .45 and is thin and seems to point nicely. Capacity is a little low with 6+1.
