A 30-06 tears my shoulder up

ive got rifles with both on them. the sims seem a bit better for recoil obsortion but the pachs. last longer. the sims are made from a real soft rubber that can eaily be damaged. Both are good pads though and do help.
30-06 tares my should up...
I'm 73 years young and love shooting.
I have shot a 458 off the bench, in the past.
Now that age has "slimmed my muscle down", the recoil hurts.
Which is better the LimbSaver or Pachmyer Del....?

It's worth repeating, I think the 2nd or 3rd post mentioned this: the stock has to fit you. Folks who use 12 gauge O/U's for sporting clays, etc. know this. They are very particular about how the gun fits. But, most folks buy a hunting rifle and never give much consideration to this. To make things worse, they typically add a thick recoil pad to cushion the recoil - this just makes the gun longer, unless you've cut down the stock.

Worth repeating

The 6.5 X 55 Swedish Mauser is a pussycat from a recoil standpoint. If you can't shoot a Swede well then you might as well give up shooting. From hunting to targets, the swede is accurate, deadly on game, and underappreciated in this country.
Your only problem is finding a domestic maker that will chamber it.

My bought my grandson (14) a sporterized small ring Mauser in 7x57 for his first center fire rifle. He has taken a few pigs and a deer with it and appears to be comfortable with the recoil. It's an oldie but a goodie and shoots pretty flat out to about 300 yards with 120gr bullets. The 140gr bullets also shoot pretty flat.

6.5x55

A friend bought a CZ 550 6.5 x55 about two weeks ago, and it too is a tack driver. using ppu 139gr. fmj we both shot three shot groups of about 1/2in.
and I was very much impressed with this rifle and ammo. This round has lots of potential for target and hunting. I might have to get another CZ.

It would help to know what rifle the OP is shooting or what ammo they have tried. One thing is to try lighter bullets or shoot some "managed recoil" ammo.

MR Madison, I believe Remington and Federal both make Managed Recoil Amunition for the 30 06. This amunition would still be suitable for hunting and would take alot of the recoil out of your Aught Six.

7mm-08

The 7mm-08 has 40% less recoil than the 06 but actually more power down range at 300 and 400 yards....that is the caliber to get

A .308 has about 15% less recoil too..

Limbsaver-1.jpg

A 30-06 with hard butt shot prone is as much recoil pain as I can stand and still concentrate on shooting a paper target.

Get a large Limbsaver recoil pad that is grind to fit, but don't grind it. Leave it 2" wide. You will be able to shoot the 30-06 all day.

With that pad I can shoot the 338 Win Mag all day, with hot loads and 250 gr bullets.

Figuring comparative recoil for equal-weight rifles is simple. Just add the bullet weight and the powder charge's weight and multiply by the muzzle velocity. That lets you calculate the percentage difference.

The 7mm08, .308 and '06 all have approximately the same muzzle velocity in their common loadings; roughly 2,900 ft/sec, give or take a hundred. In this example, then, the muzzle velocity doesn't need to be included.

So, for the 7mm08, 140 + 45 = 185. For the .308, 150 + 45 = 195. '06, 150 + 50 = 200.

So the 7mm08 is about 7.5% less recoil than an equal-weight '06; the .308 is really close to being the same as an '06.

He has a May 13 post about it on another thread

I use limb savers on my rifles, you're probably going to a variety of responses as to which is better.

If you're 73 and muscle mass has declined then you may indeed be better off with a .243 or 25-06.

Not quite, Art. Using a recoil calcualtor, the 7mm-08 with a 140 grain bullet at 2900 fps has 14 pounds of recoil with an 8 pound rifle. An 06 150 grain at 2900 has 17.6 pounds of recoil in an 8 pound rifle for a 21% difference.

6.5x55

I vote 6.5x55 swede, but not a CZ. CZ uses a 1:9 twist, and you really need a faster twist for the 140gr bullets. I think the old Swedish Mauser used 1:7.8 for the 140gr load.
