Between the Speer 124 grain +P Gold Dots and the Speer 230 grain Short Barrel Gold Dots. Weapons are Glock 19 and a Glock 30.

The .45 came from the right, the 9mm came from the left. No clothing, 5 feet distance. The 9mm penetrated to 12 inches, the .45 penetrated to 12.25 inches.

The 9mm had the largest temporary cavity of 2.25 inches, compared to 1.75 inches with the .45. I dont have my notes on me at the moment, but the retained diameters were both around .68-.70 average.

This test was backyard fun. I didnt care to calibrate nor get the velocities becuase these were two similar weapons fired at the same block at almost the same time.

There were two people, two firearms. First shot was fired, block rotated safely, all clear, second shot.

I also posted a test with .223 in the rifle forum. I also tested numerous .22 Magnum loads over the past week.

Neat test; I've always wanted to make my own ballistic gel, but cheap out and use water filled gallon jugs.

Nice display!
Nothing at all against the 9mm but my personal preference will always be .45.
Maybe I just grew up reading too much of Elmer Kieth.

Awesome, Nice work Glock19Fan!

Going to go read your .22 magnum posts now (I love that cartridge :) )

Thanks for the nice work and the great photos.

Ballistic gel means very little. My .177 pellet gun will penetrate 14in in ballistic gel. From personal combat experience. 45 is superior to 9mil. Of course that's using only Jacketed rounds. I personally would never carry anything less then a 357mag. In hand gun rounds over penetration will never be a viable threat where as under penetration will get ya killed. Just my opinion though.

I'm surprised a nine would do that well.
Actually, the 9mm is famous for penetration, just not for large amounts of energy transfer due to the smaller diameter and more pointed bullets. But interesting test, nonetheless.

What in your experience showed you that .45 is superior to 9mm. ?

"Ballistic gel means very little."

On the contrary, ballistic gel is accepted by the military and law enforcement in the United States and internationally as being a VERY useful analog to human tissue and, in an increasingly significant number of cases (as more shootings are documented) is proving to predict with a great degree of fidelity what a particular bullet can be expected to do when it impacts human flesh.

Jason Iowa,

Based on everything that has come from guys who have used FMJ rounds for combat, I would choose .45 if I had to use FMJ, as well.

While ballistic gel only gives an idea of what a round does while pushing through tissue, tests like the Hog's Head video show that quality 9mm rounds are extremely effective against bone, as well.

I do appreciate the value of confidence, though. If you feel better carrying .45, that is absolutely right for you.
