9mm Sledgehammer Recomendations

Hello all, at the next gun show I'm going to go looking for a new 9mm, or 45.

I have narrowed it down to a few specifically I am looking at I was just calling to get opinions and even suggestions on other guns that you may suggest.

So far I have
M&P 9/45
Sig 2022
Sig 226
Glock 19/21

My budget is about 500$ unless it's an ungodly great gun then I may trade my beretta in for it as partial trade.

Lemme hear your thought and suggestions!!!!!!!

Since we get to vote our personal preference, I say SIG 226. I like metal over polymer, and hammers over strikers (but my truck gun is a Glock 17, great gun hut I have no feeling for it). The 226 is one of the iconic 9mm designs. My 226 is a range gun & I have the .22lr conversion for it as well just for grins.

^^^^^This^^^^^, but I fear you may need more than $500.

G19.

Every other gun is way oversized for the 9-minimeter.

Think: the minimeter is a small cartridge of small power; therefore, a small-ish pistol is indicated.

Not the Beretta/Taurus 92FS, nor the Sig 226.

If it has to be a Sig, the best model having a proper size-to-power ratio chambered in 9mm is the early (non-rail) 228.

Be sure to look for Glock's new pocket pistol.

No doubt photoshop, someone sent this to me.

My first choice would be the Sig 226, followed by the M&P 9, then the Sig 2022, and the Glocks last. Now, full disclosure, I'm not a fan of Glocks, just don't like how they point and don't like their looks.

Now, that being said, I would choose a CZ P09 or P07 over all 4.

Size isn't a function of caliber, it's a function of use. I'd prefer my PT92 over my PT111 because it has a longer sight radius and more capacity, both of which are a function of being a service pistol. "Full size" guns just make more sense for most uses, regardless of caliber, if you don't need a smaller pistol for your intended use. Saying a gun is "too big" because of the caliber makes no sense, but based on your post I'm guessing you think masculinity is based size of the round you shoot.

The answer...rent all you can before buying. Please don't just buy a gun because someone else said they are great. Been there, done that...regretted it.

selecting a 9mm handgun

What do you intend to do with the new gun?

I carried a Sig 226 in 9mm as a duty gun for 15 years, and I have an M&P pistol. Those are both good guns, but more difficult to conceal than other options if that is your intention.

If you're just buying a gun to shoot at the range, get a 9mm. The ammo is cheaper.

To reply to all...

I have an FNX-45 Tac. I love it to death but the threaded barrel makes it just a tad to long and thick.

And as for my purpose... EDC, concealed most of the time or half ass concealed just depends on my mood. I'm normally always cold so even in the summer I will wear button ups in buttoned so it's easy for me to conceal most firearms.

In addition to your list I recommend to take a look at the following that would be in or close to your budget.

DA/SA: Beretta PX-4

DAO: Sig 250 and Walther PPX.

Striker: Sig 320, Steyr M9-A1/L9-A1, Walther PPQ.

Striker DA/SA: Walther P-99AS

Out all of these, the Steyr models may have the best grip for you and your wife if you intend on her shooting/using it.

Well, dang! Jeepgunny, if it's for EDC, my first choice suggestion in post #2 is one big honking full sized handgun. I love it, but I don't EDC with it. It's a home gun and a range gun for me. (In a would without dress code restrictions, I'd carry it, though)

For more practical EDC I'd suggest M&P compact from your original list; 9mm so you can shoot/practice more.

Hang fire- I went and shot an MP9 today and I love it. Grip needs to be a little more aggressive I feel but I'm sure I can mod it.

If you like .45, I recommend the G30sf or G36 if the double stack is a bit thick for you. Both gins are great CC options in .45.

The Sig p226 is the nicest gun on your list, but you will never see one for $500 even used. Next choices would be between the M&P 9 mm and a the Glock 19. Everybody needs a Glock 19, but the M&P will be more fun to shoot unless you do some trigger upgrade on the Glock.

Right now Aim Surplus is selling Gen II Glock 19 Police trade ins for $359, and the ones I've seen people getting over on the Glock forum look pretty nice. You can usually also find M&P police trade ins, but they are less predictable, since the older models had serious trigger problems.

If you want something in a 45, look at 1911s. You will get a much better trigger, etc. that way.

Budget 9mm my standard suggestion is the CZ P-07 or P-09. One heck of a lotta gun for generally less than $500. Reliable, accurate, Omega trigger is real nice in SA (so-so in DA, IMO). Plus it is almost exactly Glock 19 size, which is my "perfect" size for a 9mm.

Other than that, I'd go Glock 19 or 30S; depending on caliber.

While your looking take a look at the Kahr CW-9 or 45. I have both (and a 40 ) and really like them. They shoot very well too.

If you like the all-metal of the Sig 226, you may also like the Stoeger Cougars. They are Berettas with a different name stamped on them. Same machines, Beretta just moved them to Turkey and started turning them out under the Stoeger name. Great quality for the price.
