9mm shooter buying first .45...

As the owner of a few 1911s (and past owner of others), I would say your first .45 ACP should be a 1911. The 1911 has a very nice slim grip, balances well, and the steel frame soaks up recoil. Trust me, I just bought my first non-1911 .45 (an FNH FNP-45), and it's much more "jumpy" than my 1911s.

My recommendation would be the Ruger SR1911 like many others have stated, but I would also HIGHLY recommend you look at the Springfield Armory Range Officer with the adjustable sight. They are close to the same price and the SA is a great 1911 pattern pistol from one of the most well-respected 1911 manufacturers in the business.

I own (or have owned) 1911s made by S&W, Sig, Dan Wesson, Kimber, and Springfield Armory. I'd feel good about recommending the Sig as well depending on the situation, but for an all-around first .45 shooter the Ruger or Springfield Armory will be hard to beat. And, please don't believe others who say all 1911s are the same to try to get you to buy something out of the bargain bin.

original quote below

Sure, a .45ACP has more energy, but less capacity than the 9mm

There are double stack hi-cap. .45acp available. Para 1911 is the most notable and reliable. I own 3, 1 P-12 and 2 P-14's.

I've shot other people's .45's, but never really pondered buying one until a good deal came along on a Ruger SR1911.

Any advice for a 9mm shooter adding .45 into the mix?

Naaah. Just shoot it. You should be fine.
