9mm Self Defense Ammo..

Ugh EVERYTHING in Federal at Streichers.com is BACKORDERED.. Just like everywhere else.. goshdarnit !!

And don't YOU need to be LE/Mil/Sec to purchase from them?
I've bought from them for a number of years now, and always was happy. 50 round boxes for a couple of dollars more than most shops sell the 20 round boxes for.

Downside since the ammo scare, they are back ordered about a year, or at least thats what I was told last week when I called to inquire about two orders of HST's I've been waiting for since November/December.

Ammunition to go has 50 round boxes of 147gr Winchester Rangers in stock, or did over the week end, I just placed my second order then and got the first one yesterday. Second order has already shipped.

Corbon DPX rounds, SportsmansGuide.com...

I can see how the Corbon DPX/Thunder Ranch line checks all the boxes in 9x19mm and is highly rated but it costs a lot of $$$ compared to other major factory brands. Sportsman's Guide sells top brands and has $5/$10 coupons, ;). They had Remington Golden Saber bonded 9mm 124gr +P for about $21.00/per 25 rounds. From what I've seen for DPX/Thunder Ranch loads they sell for retail prices around $36-40.00 per box or 20/25 rds. :(

Golden Saber and Winchester's Ranger T lines are also sold and in service with more US law enforcement at the federal/state/local levels. That could help later on in open court if you have a critical incident. ;)

I carry ball ammo in my P228 and don't feel at a disadvantage at all. When the new super duper HP cannot be found I'm good to go with the regular ammo. It is cheaper to practice with and at self defense distance it will hit what I aim at every time.

Go ahead and back order the "good stuff" then practice with the cheap stuff and carry that till the magic bullets arrive. :)

I have no problem with getting hollow points. But more importantly, my question is: How much hollow point do you need? How many people do you plan on shooting?

I have thousands of rounds of FMJ for plinking. I keep approximately 1-2 boxes of self defense hollow points for each caliber, on hand for defensive purposes. Once I've determined that my gun shoots a particular hollow point reliably, I rarely ever shoot that ammo again in it. Why would I? Simply a waste of money. I hear of people saying: "Practice with what you carry". Sorry, but there is no way that anyone is ever going to convince me that this is logical. Accuracy between the different ammunitions is not an option. NOT at 10-30 feet. Once you know that your gun feeds a certain HP reliably, the gun isn't going to all of a sudden change it's personality and not shoot the HP. There's just no reason to need hundreds of rounds of self defense pistol ammo.

I look at the "practice with what you carry" thing to be more of a power issue rather than the ammo itself. I tend to agree with you on not using the SD type ammo for practice, other than whats in the gun when it gets changed out.

I practice with my reloads too, but for guns I use for a carry gun, those loads are equivalent power wise, to the ammo I carry in the gun. With some guns, it does make a big difference if you practice with light ''target" loads vs full power loads, and it that respect, you really should be practicing with equivalent full power loads, especially if you have troubles with the gun using that ammo.

Maybe if it was 38spl vs 357mag. But my 115 grain 9mm fmj and my 115 grain hp are about the same in all regards. Same with 124 and 147 grain. I also shoot 230 grain 45acp LRN for practice, and have 230 grain golden sabers for defense. I don't need to shoot my golden sabers at the range. And I don't change out my ammo. I might shoot a mag of hollow points on occasion, but it's more for playing. E.g. I might shoot watermelons with some fmj and then try it with hp just to see if it acts different. Same with water jugs. Again, just for fun. Not because I need to. 1 box of 20-25 SD rounds will last me more than a year.

That barely fills one mag. What about the other two in the carrier, or the rest of the other guns and mags used as backups and spares? :)

The smaller, lighter guns, like the Airweight .38's, and the lightweight 380's that seem to be so popular, are usually the ones that require practice with similar power loads to stay on top of them. Even with the larger autos you can often feel and notice the difference. I find its more noticeable with the polymer guns than the all metal guns though myself. This is especially true with the the +P, and +P+ loadings. I also find my Glocks, and most of my other autos, tend run better with reloads on the hotter end of the load data anyway. I mostly use 115 grain FMJ's over 4.9 grains of 231 for practice, but they are still a little softer shooting than the Federal 124 grain +P+ I used to use, or the 147 grain SXT's I now keep in the guns I carry.

I use 200 grain LSWC's and on occasion 230 LRN's in my .45's for practice. The mainstream commercial .45's arent really loaded up to "hot" anyway, so there really isnt much difference there.

9mm popularity

Howdy,

Evidently you don't understand that low supply=high demand. The 9mm is potential currency in a dreaded SHTF scenario. It's also a useful defense round-in it's better loadings, but I'm rambling.
I've had luck at Academy Sports getting Winchester's new FBI approved 9mm HP ammo. (Bonded). Big boxes seem to have better supply chains than your local mom & pop gun stores. Then there's the internets. Good luck.

I definitely agree that ammo and guns are great currency in a SHTF scenario. Even if S-Doesn't HTF, ammo and guns definitely appreciate. I NEVER have less than 1000 rounds per caliber. If a SHTF scenario ever happed, or I simply got too old to WANT to do any more shooting, I wouldn't need more than 1000 rounds. In a SHTF scenario, we wouldn't be "Plinking" for fun any longer. I'd narrow my "collection" down to about 4-5 guns. These would be guns that are easily carried and/or transported. I'd sell or trade the rest, and the ammo, for the things I might need. My #1 caliber in a SHTF survival scenario is 22LR. 1 rifle and 1 pistol in 22LR will satisfy 90%+ of my survival needs.

But for my 9mm, it's pretty simple. A couple of boxes of 147 grain golden sabers for one 9mm pistol, and a couple boxes of Hornady Critical Defense for the other 9mm pistol. I've tested them to know they shoot well, and I NEVER shoot them again. Just a waste of money to do that. I plink with $9.47 a box Federal 115 grain that i get at Wal-Mart. Just bought 4 more boxes today. One of the few calibers that it's actually cheaper to buy locally than on the internet. But in all honesty, my 9mm pistols will probably be the first handgun I trade/sell in a SHTF or old age scenario. I'd also sell my 380's. I'd keep my 9mm makarov and 32acp pistols ahead of them. I'd also sell my 357/38 pistols. (Except for 1, my S&W Model 13-1). When all is said and done, I'll have my Sig P220, S&W model 13-1, Walther PPK 32acp, CZ-82, and Dan Wesson 22LR. For rifles, I'd have my .223, 22LR, 12 guage, and M1 Garand. (The garand probably isn't the smartest choice, but 30-06 ammo can be found almost any place, and an 8 round clip is good for some defensive purposes). Other than the 22LR rifle/pistol, these will take care of all my self defense needs for me, my wife, and my daughter.

In my 9mm I carry Plus P 115gr CORBON Self-Defense JHP which lists the following about it. Velocity: 1350fps, Energy: 466ftlbs out of a 4" test barrel. In my .45 ACP I carry the Hornady Pistol +P 230 Gr. JHP/XTP . Might not make that big of a difference cut if it helps it at all I'm all for it.

My favorite 9mm HP load for my Browning HP was the Win Silver Tips. But they are hard to find these days.
Recently I picked up a few boxes of Remington 115gr JHP (R9MM1) which was what I used back in the late 70s in my High Power.
I know there have been advancements since the 70s in JHP 9mm ammo but I personally don't believe much better can be done on enemy personnel besides these or the Silver Tips.
A 9 is a 9, not a .357 Magnum.

The only reason I use Gold Dot 124g +P is because I got a good deal on them, but I would use any good brand name HP from Walmart.:D

I have a little bit of everything but use the 147's in my Browning because in that gun its the most accurate round I have. Maybe other Gee Whizz gosh willy wunder rounds are more effective but first you need to hit the target and I have confidence in this bullet in this gun. To much worry over paper numbers and gel tests in my opinion. Try a few varieties, pick the one your gun likes, not what some author in a gun rag likes and go with it. Your target won't like it no matter what flavor your bullet is as long as you are making hits with it. Especially if your target is a boogerman at dark thirty in the morning.

Old Grump,
My feelings exactly. The Browning goes bang every time and that is what makes me a believer in mine.
