9mm Self Defense Ammo..

The Deuce

New member
Ok, So I can't get a solid ANSWER out of anyone. My favorite Self Defense 9mm Ammo was Federal Hydrashoks 124gr and 147gr.

BUT Every website I scour .. says OUT OF STOCK, No Backorder...

Is this Round DEAD?!

And if so, what's my next BEST option.. I like The WIN PDXI's... but what has the deepest hollow point.. isn't it the RANGER-T's !?

I really don't like the Idea of Not Having HydraShoks.. I have enough left for 1 33rnd Glock clip.. That's Right.. 33 rnds left.

I want something that can ease my pain of not having my favorite ammo anymore..

What do you guys suggest?? And MAYBE A stocked reliable website addy to go along with it?? Pretty Please .. LOL:D

Streichers has Federal Hydrashoks in stock in the following flavors: 147grn Standard Pressure, 124grn Standard Pressure, and 124grn +P. The price for all three is $26/50 rounds. They also have several other types of ammo like Winchester Ranger, Federal HST, and Speer Gold Dots.

A Texas LE Agent told me that his friend the ME has pulled 150 Gold Dots out of Bodies and non had failed to Text Book expand just as advertised by the MFGR.

He also said his Agency caries the 124 or 127gr. 9MM on duty . . .

You Guys are GREAT you know that !!

I love belonging to a community that share the same passion as I do. This was a wonderful decision stumbling upon this place, signing up and learning how to use it... I have learned so much in a field that I thought was strictly a few select people but have learned that us Firearm Enthusiasts are well.. all like each other.. We believe in our rights.. as Humans.

NOW, On to do some ORDERING !!! :D

Good sources for 9mm(9x19mm) carry/protection ammunition...

I'm not a huge fan of the 147gr JHP for the 9mm.
Top loads for the 9mm(9mmNATO) in my opine are;
Winchester Ranger T 127 +P+ JHP, the Ranger T JHP(bonded) 124gr +P, the Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P, the Remington Golden Saber 124gr +P(bonded), the CorBon DPX 115gr JHP. If you really want to get a powerful well made 147gr 9mm carry load see: www.DoubleTapammo.com .

The Sportsmans Guide, www.sportsmansguide.com has the Golden Saber JHP +P bonded. Corbon and PowRball loads are sold here: www.Dakotaammo.net

I've heard conflicting reports on the effectiveness of the 147 grain 9mm. I'm sure bullet design is the most important...and I like the Ranger Ts in 147 grain. I also like how the 147 grain loads are subsonic and have less 'bang' and less snappy recoil (to me)...sort of like a 45 would be...hmmm. :p

Just my two cents...and that's probably all it's worth!! :D

Ugh EVERYTHING in Federal at Streichers.com is BACKORDERED.. Just like everywhere else.. goshdarnit !!

And don't YOU need to be LE/Mil/Sec to purchase from them??

As of about a week ago, Cabela's had plenty of good 9mm fodder on the shelf in the DFW area.

As for Streichers, it may take 'em awhile, but they'll get the ammo in eventually. And no, you don't have to be a LEO to order from them.

The next question is why you're Jonesin' for an obsolescent bullet design that's been superseded by the Federal HST and Tactical Bonded.

Personally, I carry Cor-Bon DPX's in my PF-9 -- deep penetration and excellent expansion even through heavy clothing.

Ok, so browsing upon SPORTSMANSGUIDE I came upon something intriguing..

How can something be backordered and due in at one certain time.. and the same thing but less of.. at a later date..

FOR INSTANCE.

Federal's FMJ 1000rnds is expected to be due back On July 02,2010.. but Federal's FMJ 500rnds is expected to be due back on August 31,2010

How is 1000rnds of this same ammo due in before 500rnds of the same ammo??

The more and more I browse Internet ammo sales. THE MORE I GET CONFUSED.

Margaret Beecher Stowe once said, "The Photograph is a Secret about a Secret.. the more it tells you.. the less you know..." IT'S KINDA LIKE THAT..

Can someone help me decode this world of internet ammo sales?? I have never done it before.. I wanted ammo, I drove the 20 miles to my Local Gun Shop and grabbed what I wanted..

BUT..

Now that I have been searching on here.. there is a world of possibilities and many different types of ammunition that is at my fingertips from a few mouse clicks and a credit card...

Thanks Guys

Did you check out www.sgammo.com ? Everything they have listed is in stock and usually ships the same day.

Also, the Winchester Law Enforcement Ranger Ts are basically the new (politically correct) version of the Black Talons...even though they are deadlier now. (You don't have to be in law enforcement to buy them.)

I'm telling you...check out this website...they are FANTASTIC.

PS - Once you start buying ammo on the internet, you won't go back to getting it in the store. Just easier and better in my experience.

Personally, after a lot of tests and observing results in a variety of media, I have 2 that I absolutely love.

Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P 9mm
Remington Golden Saber Bonded 124gr +P 9mm

*In that order

I believe you get great velocity and punch out of a +P 124gr round and both of these setups will ensure proper expansion and velocity transfer.

And I find them everywhere... for relatively cheap by comparisson.

im currently carrying

Remington Golden saber 124 gr +p and
Winchester Extreme Elite 124 gr +p

i had some pmc starfire 147 gr(std) left over from when i owned a p6 and they belched a TON more fire out of my little xdsc....so much so my buddy asked what ammo i had swapped to.

I found a website (may have been Chuck Hawks) that says Federal 115 gr JHP is the best all around self defense round in 9mm. He also says never use 147 gr (or heavier) JHP rounds in 9mm. Not sure why, but I think it has to do with reduced muzzle velocity and energy as compared to lighter bullets. I think his argument is that the depth of penetration will not be good enough to stop a BG.

Anyway, go to Sportsman's Guide (just google it) and place your order. Yep, it's backordered there too, but hey, better to order it than wait for Wally World to get more, IF you happen to get there before the crowd cleans out the supply again...

Federal Hydrashok is rather old technology now.

Federal's current top cartridge is HST and is highly rated but is almost impossible to find currently.

(Although I did manage to find 400 rds of the Federal HST 124 gr. +P ammo.)

Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P and Remington Golden Saber Bonded 124gr +P are GTG and are my current carry loads. FWIW.

Here's a great thread regarding defensive ammo you may find informative.

Ist served it's purpose, and now it's gone. It's been replace by the superior HST which can be found if you Google around. The Hydrashok was good, and represented an important advancement, but still would occasionally fail to expand. More so in short bbls. Not the case with HST.

Got a recent quip from John Farnum whose opinion I value highly. You can form your own opinions.

He rates DPX the best for penetration and reliable expansion, and that's what he carries.

Federal has the best quality control, and the HST is excellent.

Gold Dot is right in there with the best, also.

Golden Saber is still good, though not quite as reliable with re: to expansion as the others.

Not a criticism, just an observation, but so many have "favorite loads" they've grown fond of after carrying them for so long. Never used 'em. Just carried them. That's fine. Doesn't mean they aren't good loads, but when better loads replace old technology maybe it's time to move on.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

I love the federal 147 HST rounds, to me that it in 9mm. Ammunition to go has them in stock bought three boxes.
