9mm plinker gun

A while back i posted a question about a cheap 9mm plinker. Alot said the hi point, and as much as i love my hi point 9mm carbine. I dont think i want the pistol. Its big and heavy hard to take down ect. I will use the gun as a plinker and to take with me while riding quads and hiking. So i dont want the extra weight, right now im trying to decide between the sd9ve and the kahr ct9. I can get both for about the same price. From what ive heard the sd9ve has a heavy trigger pull, while the kahr is a sweet shooter. One mag from factory vs 2 mags. Worth getting the kahr and a extra mag vs the sd9ve and an apex kit?

Among other handguns, I have a S&W SD9VE and a Khar CM9 (& I understand that Khar pistols share the same trigger design, and therefore the same trigger feel). I do not mind heavier triggers myself, and shoot revolvers in DA frequently so the 8# trigger on the SD9VR works fine for me. It does require better trigger control to shoot well than, say, any SA short trigger. My Khar has a 7# trigger that has a smoother and slightly shorter pull length that the SD9VE.

The SDVE doesn't get much respect, being a Glock knockoff and with the M&P line being their flagship pistols. Since the Khar comes with 2 mags in your situation, I would lean toward the Khar myself

(& I'm not sure that I understand which comes w 1 mag and which comes w 2 mags in the deals you're getting)

I have a CM9 but I am not familiar with the CT9. From what I am seeing, the Kahr has half the capacity of the S&W and only one mag. If this is going to be a plinker, one 8 round mag is going to get old pretty quick, you will want at least a couple of more and at $30 a piece.... ouch.

I bought the now discontinued SAR B6 for plinking when they were closing them out for $299 and have not regretted it one little bit. You can still get the B6 in its plastic version, the B6P.

Might want to take a look at a CZ PCR it's light, accurate and has a 14 round capacity.
I have a Kahr P9 and like it alot but the PCR is first choice except when it's 90 degrees outside.

Im in ny so 10rds max any ways. My dealer told me the kahr ct9 comes with one mag, new ones are hard to get and pricey. Then thought about the 9e ruger, and again mags are pricey and might just go with the sr9. Leaves just the sw sd9ve as im looking for a 300 dollor beater gun

Hey C90,

I was one of those that commented favorably on the Hi-Point C9 for a cheap, reliable plinker. Yeah, they're ugly and heavy, but I'll keep mine nonetheless. Also, after reading your original post and thread starter regarding cheap 9s, along with other posts on 9s I got to reading, I decided to look for another one myself, and wanted to keep it in the under 400 bucks category.

About 2 weeks ago now, and after going over a bunch of reviews, I decided on a Ruger SR9E. I've put well over 200 rounds through it since I got it, and it's worked perfectly. I'm not any kind of a dedicated hand-gunner, but I was totally pleased with the trigger pull, how it operated, how I was hitting with it at 10 yards, and how nicely it broke down for cleaning after the shooting sessions. Though I do need lots more range time with it, it's a total pleasure to shoot. As I probably won't reload for the pistol, I found some Federal Aluminum ammo (115 grn. FMJs) for 10 bucks a box of 50 at Wally World in my area. That's a pretty fair price for a box of ammo.

I searched around quite a bit to come up with the cheapest SR9E I could find, as that was my mission. After all costs from purchasing the pistol on gunbroker (best deal) and paying my FFL guy his cut, that NIB Ruger cost me 349 bucks, total. You just might want to consider one, and you may even get a better deal than I got by shopping around. I really like the Ruger, and plan on doing a lot more shooting with it. Man, does the ammo go quick...

The only reason i dont want the high point is because of the weight and the bulkyness of the gun. Wont be very comfortable while riding and hiking. I love my 995 carbine and would never part with it. But for my intended uses for my budget gun, i dont think the hi point will fit the bill. I though about a 9e ruger but for the price of them and for the price of a spare mag, i might just aswell buy a sr9. Trying to keep my price around the 300 range

I vote for the S&W, they give good capacity and big bang for the price. They are overlooked and over shadowed by the M&P line but make a great option for a lower priced 9mm. It is the one I would go with and if the trigger is a little to heavy then look at the Apex kit.

Is the smith durable? Need it to be reliable, thats one good thing the high point has going for it. I truly dispise glocks and seeing how the smith is a copy of the glock,it kinda bothers me a bit

IMHO, a Stoeger Cougar or a Walther PPX is as inexpensive as I want to get for a new 9mm semiautomatic pistol. I can always save money on a used .40S&W compared to a used 9mm, the used Sig P239 in .40S&W I can get for $349.00 wraps rings around anything else I can get fo that price, although I'd need to spend more money on the higher priced ammo once my stash of .40S&W ammo is used up.

I bought a SD9VE to replace my Hi-Point C9. I like it very much and based on my experience and the experience of most owners on the S&W forums, they are very reliable and accurate. The triggers are good for some and others complain. I don't have any problems with the trigger on mine (once I got accustomed to it). Since it is almost exactly the size and weight of a Glock 19, it has the same tendency for people to limp wrist it. I paid $289.99 for mine.

Ruger 9e would be my first choice, followed by the canik tp9sa/tp9sf/tp9v2, then smith and Wesson sd9ve. But I'm honestly surprised no one has mentioned the Taurus pt111. I've not shot one but from everything I've heard it's a great gun for the price! At $200 if it's a lemon you wouldn't be out much if you were to resell it.

Went and held the sd9ve and the hi point today. The smith felt really good in my hand, nice and light and didnt have the "block oh i mean glock" grip. The high point felt like a brick, very top heavy from the slide and the size of the slide made it bulky. Grip wasnt terrible on the hi point, just to heavy and bulky.

I second the Taurus PT111 G2...

I've had mine for about 8 or 9 months IIRC, and it has been just flawless.

I've put over 500 rounds through mine (lost count somewhere) and it's gotten to where it just feels "natural" in my hand.

It has a great trigger, double strike capability, and holds 11-12 rounds. 12 is what is advertised, but that last one is almost impossible to get in the mag...

Accuracy is very good, at least for what I use it for. Probably not a prariedog gun, but it shoots pretty small groups out to 15yds for me. My eyesight is the limiting factor beyond that.

I sold my Sig P6 for under 400.
They're used, but generally not a lot, but they have all the SIG quality.
The capacity is only 8, but for a plinker...
