9mm GOOD FOR DEFENSE?PART 2

Hi guys quick question for you. What are your opinions of the 9mm for defense? As you know i am a 45acp fan,not knocking anyones caliber choice here. However i find that my 1911 gets to heavy all day long.I find myself leaning toward my Glock 21 as of late big but light for it's size. And then there is the glock 17 thinner than the 21 and even lighter.I may sound foolish here but i am not sure about the 9mm,heard a lot of bad things about it.Any of em true? Why do i hear so much praise for the 45acp?Everywhere gun rags, gun stores, gun guys etc....I heard the Isreali special forces use 9mm guns.Hi Powers i think. Why don't they use the 45acp if it is so much better than the 9mm?They must see more trouble in a month in that part of the world than we see in a lifetime.Any help would be great.

Would you rather get hit by a baseball traveling 90 mph or a bowling ball 20 mph?

I'd hate to be hit by either but that bowling ball would do some serious damage compared to the baseball.

Greetings Sir; Sometimes in warm weather environment and dressed in plain cloth'es,
I do pack a Sig P228 in 9m/m; loaded with
the famed "secret service" load. My 228 is
of the pre-ban, hi-cap variety.

I think the 9mm shines the brightest when put into a really size efficient package. The Kahrs, for instance. But, most any of today's best 9s can also be had in .40. Have you given that any consideration?
That said, I think the BEST of the 9s are right up there with the big boys starting with the number 4. But, this effectiveness is limited to a select few loads. Whereas, the the others are a lot more forgiving of load choice.
If YOU shoot your best with a 9mm, vs. the others, THAT should be your clue, yes? Multiple, solid, center hits with the 9mm beat peripheral hits with the others, I feel.

The 9mm in appropriate load and bullet is quite adequate for self defense. Law enforcement needs (or they think they need) an offensive cartridge like the .40S&W or .357 Sig. But the average citizen who wishes to protect his family and property is better off with the 9mm.

It is easier to shoot for the novice or occasional shooter and will do the job.

Any reliable, quality 9mm pistol stoked with a premium hollowpoint load (115gr-124gr) is ideal for defensive purposes. My personal preference is for +P loadings.

I stick basically with the 9 & 45 for defensive use. I never feel undergunned with either.

The 9mm was overated for a long time, and now with the "high" capacity ban, people are rediscovering the .45 or moving on to the .40/.357 sig. Now it is being underated. If I had a choice of 19 rounds of 9mm or 8 rounds of .45, I'll take the former. Well, situation pending...

Forget the 9mm. Give me a G18 fitted with a .22lr slide, a flush fit 50 round clip, and a 80 round extended clip as backup. Now THATS firepower !

Anybody who puts down the nine willing to take this test?

There is a pile of $1000000. You can go pick it up and keep it after someone shoots you in COM with a high quality 9mm round.

I also personally know that some of the most respected professional trainers carry 9mms.

They are easy to shoot and are inexpensive for practice.

A Glock or Kahr are easy and reliable guns.

ArmySon, what would you rather be hit with, a baseball traveling 90 mph, or a softball going 70mph ? Thats a more accurate comparison. Both will hurt, but one will cover more area.

I like the 9mm. With the right hollow point ammo,it is very effective. I carry a Glock 26. I load it with 124gr Remington Golden Sabers. 9mm ammo is available the world over. You might have a tough time getting 45ACP in Europe, or Africa. 9mm, no problem!!!

Bigger is better. Shot for shot the 45 does more damage. 9mm will work and 45 will work better when less than instantly fatal shot placement is made. In many situations you may only get one shot and I want to be sure I hit him hard the first time. Both will do the job but I'd rather have a well placed 45 hit than a well placed 9mm hit. But that's just me.

Almost as good as the very best; certainly adequate.

I normally carry a 9x19 or 45ACP.

The 9mm certainly is adequate for self-defense, especially in the Corbon and other +p loads. THat said, I keep a Glock 29(10mm) in the car, as I think 10mm combines the best of both worlds, heavy bullet moving fast. I have plenty of other caliber guns, though, and the Keltec P32 is easy to carry anywhere you go.

Simply put - there's an awful lot of dead people with 9mm slugs in their corpse...

I like both caliber and I own each kind. But I favor always a big bore for all purpose.

Some said the 9mm is easier to shoot, but many says too that it is easier to shoot the .45, whichever is right depends on the shooter. In a closed range I had a practice, the shooter is complaining of his lightweight 9mm pistol as it is harder to control, I mean it is more wild during recoil. Not the gun that has a problem but it is the shooter.

If the israilites special forces favor the 9mm why does the FBI shift to the Springfield 45.

The number one stopper of all time, the .357 mag, is nothing more than a fast 9mm. Stuff that 9 with double rows of Cor-bon 115s and put your mind at ease. As far as mass vs. velocity, think about rifle cartridges. Small bullets going fast are very effective.

Although I like the 45 ACP; mainly because I like the recoil impulse, I honestly can't see it being a much more effective round than the 9mm+p velocities. I'll let the ballisticians argue over the scientific merits of both.

That said, IF you want the best of both worlds, you might want to consider 45 Super. It launches 45 wt ammo at 9mm +p velocities. The manufactures could make it go faster and still be within safe pressures for modern firearms w/fully supported chambers. But like everyone else they try to cater to the lowest common denominator and make it safe for low quality firearms w/out ramped barrels, therefore it only surpasses 45 +p by 150 fps on average out of 5" barrels.

Your delemma is one simmilar to mine. I like 9mm+p 115gr Corbon, but would like to carry a lightweight 45 in 45 Super. Comming up with an al alloy platform that will not get an elongated slide stop pin hole will be the challenge.

From the data in the mags, the 9mm seems to be a decent ammo in the hotter loadings. I'd go with the gun that you like and shoot best, then settle for the ammo that's the lightest and hottest for defense. That's my 230 grains worth, or whatever 2 pennies weigh.

Well, a number of people have been killed by pitches in the 90-100 MPH range with a baseball, but I have yet to hear about any boling ball fatalities.

1911 guy, if you love 1911's and if you're concerned about weight find a colt defender. It is 23 ounces of 45 caliber fun with a 3" barrel. Springfield also makes a beauty with a 3.5 but slightly heaver. Once you get used to the "kick" you're ready for anything. I think Colt still has pictures on their website and try Bachmans pawn and gun (online) for the best new price I found.
