9MM Confession

George Hill

Staff Alumnus
There is a 9MM out there that I really like. I've been wanting one for about 4 months now. There is no real justification for it. I just loved the way it felt in my hands. I could have picked it up at the time - it had a full capacity mag and a Clinton Mag with it. It was NIB for only $400. I REALLY WANTED IT. But I passed it up because of the caliber... I don't like 9s all that much.
This one is haunting me. It was a Browning BDM. It came out not very long ago and was quickly discontinued due to lack of sales. I want one. But don't ask me why.

I'll sell you one with only 1 box of shells through it----no high-caps though(2 10-rounders) for $275. Extra 10-rounders can be had from CDNN for $14.99.

I have a BPM-D also(basically a decock only BDM) and that's the one I've been shooting the most---the BDM just sits there. I'm trying to thin the herd a bit----there is also a Glock 19 at the shop with my name on it.

George, why don't you like 9's all that much?

With good +P ammo, you can get close to .357 mag performance. With plinking ammo, you get low-cost fun.

Best overall value?

Dave,

It's just the school George went to... One that was built a year shy of a dozen past 1900... :D

In semi-automatic, I go no larger than 9mm. If I did it would be in .45 caliber. Why? Partly because of recoil And then the .40S&W and .357SIGs are retrofitted into 9mm sized guns. They sometimes fail because of physics. The .45 is generally shot through pistols designed to handle the larger cartridge.

The exception is the Glock, which I would shoot anything through with confidance. They just get the physics right.

Rugerfreak, that is a good offer. George what the heck are you waiting for? E-mail the man!

Yes it is only a 9mm. But I promise that no one at Utah TFL will dare laugh. Heck, the most common pistol out there last time was 9x18. :p

Had a...

...BDM. Absolutely loved it; slim, accurate, funky rotateable "pistol/revolver" switch, typically ergonomic High Power-like grip.

Traded it for a Mac SE/30 which was obsolete 15 minutes after I walked out the door with it. :(

Wish I still had the Browning. (Come to think of it, wish I still had the SE/30, too. It'd look cool sitting next to my Color Classic...)

Larry,

You're being very nice to George about this, but he has talked some serious smack about the 9mm cartridge. Somebody in Utah probably has a Duece and a half loaded with his smacktalk waiting to be served up as lunch.;) :D

The thinnest full size 9mm?!
Hey, that sounds very cool! Even if the safety is operated in reverse, it's still a great-looking gun!:D

Take it!

I learned a long time ago never to talk smack about a particular caliber, especially when somebody with said caliber could shoot better than me. I guess it don't matter if my holes are bigger, if there are more of his holes in the target faster. :)

I've seen George shoot, he will do okay with a 9mm. We will pick on him though. Next time I balloon drag against him I'll have to use my Makarov to keep it fair. :p

From the Church of the Tactical Truth:

Nay, good fellows... I am never afraid to talk the smack.

For long years ago I parted company with my last Nine. It was a Sig P-228 that was well accesorized.
It sacrificed it's self for that I might aquire my first HK. I looked upon the HK in it's caliber of .40 and saw that it was good. The HK served well and while other items listed in the great book of armaments came and went, that HK in .40 stayed by my side performing tasks that lesser Nines could never manage... Herculian feats of power.
These made the Nines tremble with fear and anger and they did gnash there little teeth and scratch with there nasty little claws but for all their wailing they could not harm the mighty .40! They crawled away spitting and snarling never to return.
Then as it came to pass the .40 did grow old. It looked upon the land for a suitable successor and it did beheld the strong and mighty .45!
Thus passed the days of the .40 and begat the return .45. For ages ago the .45 did rise up saying that it would one day return... it was long prophisied that it would return but the people forgot. They forgot the love and the devotion that the .45 had given them. They were wicked and abomidable and put other guns before it!
Procrastinate not the day of your repentance and heed the words of St. Browning!
For the day of the .45's return was at hand! When it descended from on high it was followed by a truimphant chorus. Angels wept with joy as the sinner had repented from his evil ways and was forgiven. Blessed was he.
And as it came to pass, he went abroad in the land speaking of the truth of the everlasting 1911. People did hear is words and they did harken to the truth of it.
They did partake and found that it was delicous to the taste... They wanted others to share the joy that they found! And some followed... Others lost their way and fell in dispair as they were begiled by the serpent Glock.
Many mocked the true believers from that great and spacious building - the Temple of Nine. They laughed and pointed... But the high capacity Nines capable of fearce point-shooting firepower could not withstand the well aimed shot of the holy hardball.

Amen.

rugerfreak - that is a good offer. Thank you.
But right now is a bad time. My time for buying my next gun will be for my birthday. End of March there abouts.
I am not 100% sure what I may get...

"you will only get .357 mag performance if you bullet expands as advertised by the manufacturer"

9mm has a diameter of .355 inches
.357 mag has a diameter of .357 inches

So what exactly do you mean?

In truth the 9mm +p+ is a superb round with balistics that aproach but do not quite reach those of the venerable
.357 magnum. With triple the ammo capacity I would rather have a good 9mm though.
