9mm chokes on hollow points

I shoot quite a lot of 9mm and have 3 9mm guns in 1911 style

Dan Wesson Pointman
Springfield M1911-A1
Smith and Wesson Pro Series

All three guns run fine on ball ammo.

The 115 and 147 gr NATO run fine. The 124 gr JHP is the problem child.

Only the Dan Wesson digests everything you run through it.

The other two will shoot a couple of rounds of JHP and then will try to double feed and bind the gun up.
When I look at the guns, I see no real difference in the ramp and no obvious reason for the failure to feed. The Smith and Wesson and the Springfield do not have a whole lot of rounds through them.

I would like to have both guns run the same way as the Dan Wesson.

BTW I also have a Sig P229, CZ SP01,G17 and G19 and those guns run fine.

Any suggestions on what to look for?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I had to turn both my Springfield 9mms over to FLG to have the integral barrel ramps recontoured (not just "polished") to get them to feed hollowpoints.
I am sure the Internet Intelligentsia will rise up and squeal girlishly at the loss of "case support" but the brass is still as well supported as in my Colt with old fashioned 1911 type frame and barrel ramp.

I am sure Springfield Customer Service/Custom Shop will tinker with your SA and maybe even your Smith if you do not have somebody reliable in mind.

No doubt you've already tried the mags from the Dan Wesson in the other two, just thought it was worthy of mentioning, though.
How about trying other hollow points in all the guns?
With all the options, maybe there's another version of hollow points that will work in all three.
It could save whittling on your guns.

Good idea about the magazines. To be factual, I have not tried the Dan Wesson magazines in the other guns. I have been using Wilsons on all of them. I believe Wilsons were standard on the Smith and Wesson.

The gunsmith out at Rio Salado is pretty good so I may talk to him next weekend. It is not a particularly serious problem at this point as I use ball ammo a lot. Because the Smith and the Springfield are still pretty new, I thought running the guns pretty wet until the surfaces smoothed up would solve the problem. I have about a thousand rounds through the two guns mentioned and more through the Dan Wesson. The DW has been a great performer right out of the box with anything you want to run through it.

I do appreciate the advice.

I doubt it's feed ramp problems causing a double feed.
That's usually more magazine related

Try a Mec Gar mag

Im curious about your term "double feed". Does the gun actually have 2 live rounds come out of the magazine during the same cycle of the slide? Or is there a fired case still in the chamber with a live round behind it?

Its VERY rare to have a single feed lip design magazine let 2rounds go. If thats the case the feed lips on the mags are trashed.

More details will help figure out the problem

I have a Bersa BP9cc that had the same issue out of the box: 1 out of 4 FTF malfunctions with hollow points. FMJ ran flawlessly. A polished feed ramp cured the problem. I sent it to a warranty center and it was done for only the cost of the shipping.

Maybe it's just the bullet design.
Like the hollow points that have sectional slits in the nose.
Some of them can stick out a little and catch on feed ramps.
I once had some of those, and the only way they were trustworthy was when the errant parts were shaped back where they belonged.
Just a thought.

That's how I'd interpret it.

The "case still in the chamber" would be a failure to extract

I also suspect it's the feed lips letting the 2nd round pop out too soon

There is a fired case partially extracted and a live round underneath most of the time when it occurs. Sometimes it is a failure to feed. Tapping the slide can sometimes allow the gun to go into battery.

The gun has been cleaned after every outing. Rails have a very light coat of lithium grease applied for long term non use and a liberal dose of multipurpose oil I get from glock that is applied and cycled before I shoot.

i would try a new mag as well my friend couldnt get his to run after using wilsons @ all. Spent 300 bucks on mags that wouldnt feed correctly in his gun.

I would clean the mags ...and see if the problem goes away.../I use Wilson 9mm ETM mags in all of my 1911's in 9mm and they're very good mags.

I also do not use grease on the rails in a 9mm 1911.../ something like Break Free might be a better choice on 9mm 1911's - grease is a little too heavy in my view.

Switch the mags around in all 3 guns...( mark them with a permanent marker ) ....it might just be a mag issue in your guns / I have a buddy that has a springfield and kimber 1911 in 9mm and neither gun seems to like the Wilson mags much ....( my Kimber 4" in 9mm, a Les Baer in 5" and a Wilson in 5" all run my Wilson mags just fine ).....

It may be a slide lock pin issue as well on some guns.../ the way they're ground may suit some mags...but not all mags.

Ok so its not a "Double feed". You are having extraction/ejection issues. This can be caused by a weak or broken extractor or even by crap built up under the extractor hook

On a 1911 pistol sometimes a ejector with an extra long nose will cure ejection problems. Basically it hits the case rim sooner in the slides travel.

It sounds like you're having extraction and feed issues. For the feed problem, look into the Metalform mags with the front ramp design. I bought some for my Rock 9mm and they work great, have no problem feeding even HPs with wide openings like Speer Gold Dots. Article on the mag design:

http://www.dillonprecision.com/docs/march_07_metalform_mags.pdf

Midway and Brownells carry them. Metalform pn is 9FR794 IIRC. According to the article, Springers come with the Metalforms, eyeball yours to see if you already have them.
