9mm & .45ACP : why doesn't size matter?

EnochGale, not sure where you're headed with these questions in relation to this topic but ...

I have more experience with the 9mm than the .45ACP. Most of the time I feel that I am well armed with a 9mm especially which I can find facts & figures to back up that belief. However, sometimes (like when looking at the two different calibers side-by-side since I own both) I wonder if that is indeed the case as the .45ACP seems to be a better option.

Since the baby came along a couple of years ago and I've moved into fatherhood, I no longer train as seriously as I once did. I try to hit the range every other week but sometimes (due to work and family obligations) I might not make it out there until every third or sometimes even fourth week. I do slow fire at 75 feet and rapid fire at 25 feet with the goal of keeping all of the shots in or near the X-ring. Presently, I am not completely satisfied with my performance.

I also think that size does matter. One way to address this is to look at the cross-sectional area of a bullet. A 9 mm is 9mm wide whereas a .45 is 11.33 mm wide. Using the formula for the area of a circle (pi*r squared), what you get is an area of 63.58 for the 9 mm and an area of 100.77 for the .45, a full 1/3 larger.
