9mm 1911s

Are there any 9x19 1911s out there that don't cost an arm and a leg? Did any middle-of-the-road manufacturers ever make these a standard option? I see that STI offers their Trojan in 9mm; how about any maker a step or two down from STI?

How funny, I actually own a springfield 1911 and was just coming to make a post about it.

Prices arn't bad, new $750 or so, used a few hundred less.

But read my post before you buy, under new subject.

Springfield, STI, and Norinco all offer 1911 9mms. The Norinco can't be sold in the US due to Clinton legislation. A few have trickled in from Canada I hear. Colt and Auto Ordnance also offered 1911 9's at one time so you could keep an eye open for a used one.

I've got one on consignment at a local gun shop. Price is $550. The shop is Personal Defence and Handgun Safety in Raleigh. They want $30 for shipping/handling/insurance. You can contact them at Personal Defence

What about some of the Star surplus pistols anyone have any experience with them? The price is right. About $200 or so.

I have a Springfield 1911A1 Full-Size Loaded stainless steel in 9mm . Right now it is at Teddy Jacobson's shop for a little TLC on the action/trigger.

The Springfield Loaded Full Size is a nice gun for what it is. It is a moderately priced 1911 that should give the shooter good performance. Its NOT to be compared with a custom 1911 or other high-end pistols. But for what it is, it does a good job.

My gun has had very good reliability and has not yet jammed. I only shoot FMJ ammo and feeding has been great. I use the WalMart Winchester "white box" ammo for $11 per 100 rounds.

The pistol is made in Brazil and is a "metric" gun. Many of the parts are not stainless, but are hard-chromed. The Springfield guns typically have fairly good slide-to-frame fit. Mine is no exception. The gun is a good shooter and accuracy is above average for that type of 1911.

I wasn't too fond of the trigger (5-6 pounds pull) so I sent it off for some trigger work. When all is said-and-done I would buy the gun again. Its nice and cheap to own and shoot.

My next 1911 will be a semi-custom built on a Caspian frame/slide.

Pistol Meiseter,

Wish I could have had your luck, my gun has a 50% malf rate, FTRTB, today I talked to springfield who agreed to look at it. Rather upset I have to pay shipping and it will take 3-4 weeks but atleast it's free. I liked the ability to shoot a 1911 frame for the 9mm cost, hope they are able to fix it for me.

Quess Walther spoiled me, they payed overnight shipping and all repairs on a 5 year old P99, and got it back to me in a week.

You can find the occasional used Combat Commander in 9mm too. I did and mine is a nice gun. The orignal Commander should be available in 9mm too, since they started out in that caliber. Colt was trying for a contract to replace the .45 1911 A1 as the service pistol. No contract was let the services just soldiered on with the .45s in the inventory until the Beretta M9 was adopted.

I realize that Norinco's are banned for importation into the US, but I bought a 9mmP 1911 model NIB a few months ago for $425 Canadian, or about US$275. It's well made, accurate and has fed all kinds of different ammunition (including my reloads, which is a bonus..) without a problem. It also comes standard with an extended GS beavertail, "combat" hammer, extended thumb safety and slide stop (yuk..that came off RIGHT away), and the cheesiest imitation Hogue finger-groove rubber grips imaginable. I've since installed Hogue "palm swell" rubber panel grips, which makes it a not-too-shabby-looking pistol for a not too much cash outlay.:)

At the 2002 IDPA Southern Regional last weekend, I saw a whole bunch of 9mm Springfield Loaded 1911's (I was a SO). Did not see any FTF's or FTE's on any of them. Out of those people shooting ESP, I would say more than half were shooting Springfield 9mm's. Right now they are the hot ticket in IDPA in ESP.

I personally think that Colt and Kimber are missing the boat here. If they offered a 9mm in their 1991 and Classic respectively, they would sell a lot of them.

John,

I HAVE a 1991A1 9mm and it is a good IDPA ESP gun. Unfortunately it was an uncataloged variation, supposedly a European order overrun, and not regularly available. You are right, they should wake up and smell the coffee.

I too have thought about the 9mm in a 1911 format. It would make a nice addition to my 45's, 38 Super, and 9x23. I would like to try one out first tho. I'm guessing they would feel different than most of the other offerings for the 9mm.

I have a Para Ordnance P18 9mm. It originally was only available to LE and Military as the only mags they were making were 18rds. But 10rd mags are available, they just didn't get in the catalogs.

I have been shooting mine in IPSC Limited, Limited 10, and in IDPA ESP. I did a few things to it like a trigger job and beavertail, but not anything expensive or radical. I really like it but then two of my other competition guns are Paras too. It's a bit heavier than other 9mm guns but that just helps with recoil even more. And that big magwell is hard to miss in a reload.

9mm 1911

I too have been looking at a 9mm 1911 but wanted an American-made pistol. I second those that wish Kimber/Colt would wake up and put out a 9mm.

Maybe if we all hammer them with requests for a 9mm they'll get on the ball and make it happen...

Well, to start with it's not a 1911, and it has that funky magazine safety...

Other than that, a good gun.... but still NOT a 1911.

I have spanish Star model super B 9mm, bought it new, and I love it, not quite 100% 1911 clone but outside shape is very close and comfortable to shoot.

You can get a STI Trojan in 9mm in either 5 or 6". The reviews say it will take super hot loads, too. 124g NATO from a 6". That sounds like fun.
