8mm Mauser

I bought a Yugo 8mm Mitchel Mauser almost eight years ago. I have never shot it. I think I might find some ammo and try it out. The rifle is in perfect condition. I have always been scared I would skin it up if I fired it.

A Mauser is a warrior, not a museum piece. Go ahead and shoot it!!

Talked me into it. Where is a good website to get 8mm ammo? Also what grain bullet do I need? I am guessing 140 grain. I looked at AIM Surplus, and all they have is 200grn. Will that be too much for this old rifle?

michael m,
Just make sure you know if it is corrosive ammo or not. You have to do a thorough cleaning after shooting most 8mm surp ammo because it is corrosive.

Michael, corrosive ammo is simply not worth it IMO.

I still have a few hundred rounds of corrosvie 196 and 198 FMJs from Egypt, probably from the '50s to '70s, and it shoots well and is quite powerful. But my barrel is already nearly 70 years old and I don't care to take any chances or be forced to clean my barrel in record time and with extra effort just because of cheap ammo.

My favorite "normal" shooting or hunting rounds are Sellior & Bellot 196 gr SP or SPCE (soft point cutting edge if you hunt larger game). These are brand new, high quality Czech rounds coming out at almost 2600 fps for over 2900 ft-lbs of energy, equivalent to full house .30-06. You can get them online at places like Sportsmansguide or Midway, etc for about $20 for a box of 20. I've also gotten some great rounds from GA Arms, who I will probably pick as my next bulk supplier. My fav rounds thus far are Norma SPs or HPs (HPs no longer made). They are more like $40 for 20 now, so I reserve them a bit more.

EDIT: I just realized S&B is actually cheaper than GA Arms for 8mm, and S&B is full Euro spec loading also, so I'm going that route for bulk. GA Arms does have some interesting 185 gr ballistic tip ammo though, may have to try that..

Yes...please fret about corrosive ammo and spend your money on commercial, expensive ammo.
That will leave more surplus 8mm for me.

I had never said anything about running out and buying surplus ammo. I have shot it over the years in my Mosin Nagant. I clean the rifle really well and have had no problems over the last 6-7 years.

I like the way my Yugo Mauser patern Rifle feels. It was built for severe duty and makes most of the new bolt actions seem flimsey.
