8mm mauser-220 Swift conversion

I wouldnt do this conversion, your reciever was made to function with the 8x57 Mauser Cartridge. I have an old small ring spanish mauser that was rebarreled to .308 and It absoloutly will not feed soft points without jamming. I only fire light handloads in it but its a real headache.

After thinking more about it I believe I'll save the .220 swift barrel for another build. A much better re-barrel for a mauser action would be one based on the 8x57 case IMO. I believe I'll go with 6mm remington, but haven't completely decided against .257 roberts. But like the OP, I believe I'll get some more use out of the 8mm first.

I've been considering it too Steven. Ha ha. Although I may end up doing it anyway. There are some things you can do to improve feeding.

A long time ago guys use to ream the Chambers out on these things to 8MM 06. Its easy to make once chambered, just get an 8mm 06 die, and some good .323 soft points and use 30 06 brass. There is reloading data for this cartridge, and its a real thumper, I have never heard of the longer cartridges like this having feeding problems, just the shorter ones. Also 7x57 Mauser would not cause any problems either, and its a fine Deer Hunting Cartridge. 8x57 Mauser is wicked when Handloaded. Good luck with Your Project.

@ TX Hunter- I have considered re-barreling just to have something different, and more accurate than the original military barrel thats on it now. There's nothing really wrong with it the way it is, and another 8mm barrel may very well go back on it. I'm just tossing around options as the OP is doing

Also, I'm not a huge fan of the military style "step down" taper on the original barrels.

Yeah like I said previously I look forward to building a good relationship with the 8×57. Until such a time I feel like I want something else. Only then will I worry about conversions. Thanks txhunter.

5150 what kind of barrel that's currently on it or going to BE put on it. Currently a military barrel. And its a large ring.

How does she function keg? Any specifics on what you had to rework if anything?

Matt..this was a long time project....It seems like a lot of my projects are that way...hahaa....
I first bought a stainless Wilson barrel from a gunsmith in NY....He was clearancing them out....I think #3 countour....(I wanted a hunting gun..not a target gun)....Then I bought a barreled FN Mauser action from a friend with a gun shop....It was mint....Then a very light synthetic choate stock....I carried it to a good gunsmith I know and had him put it all together....It took several years for this project..but I was in no hurry....It cuts a ragged hole at 100 yrds..no problem....
