870 Police or Mossberg 590A1

I'd say the biggest reliability issue with any pump gun is the shooter. It's not a question of "will the gun cycle reliably?" It's a question of "Will YOU cycle it reliably?" So either would be a good reliable choice as long as you do your part.

I would give the Mossberg the edge because of the fact that the shell lifter remains in the up position, making loading the gun easier. The Mossberg safety is better witha traditional stock. If you use a pistol grip stock, then I think the Remington wins. Both are great guns so just pick whichever you can get cheaper with the features you want and whichever you think looks nicer.

If you have a Mossberg 500/590 problem anyone can fix one at home, not so much for an 870.

Dented Tube on an 870? Requires a Gunsmith with Soldering Skills
Dented Tube on a 500/590? Strap Wrench

Bad Ejector on an 870? Riveting Jig and a Gunsmith
Bad Ejector on a 500/590? Screwdriver

Worn Lockup on 870? Receiver is toast
Worn Lockup on a 500/590? Replace the Barrel

Worn Feed Latches on an 870? Needs Staking Tool
Worn Feed Latches on a 500/590? No Tools

INMY01TA.....

If I ever get a bad extractor or a dented mag tube I'll let you know, but in over 50 years of shooting 870s, both mine and the State of MD's, it hasn't happened.

I had one shell latch restaked. It took the smith a New York Minute and he did not charge me. And it only got restaked because he offered to do it.Prior, I just had to put it back in place when I pulled the TG for cleaning. Worked fine.

As for action wear, The steel receiver in an 870 merely holds all the parts in place. Lockup is between the breech block and the barrel extension. An oversized breech block is available, but I've never needed one.

All I've needed is two firing pin springs and ammo.

A humongous amount of ammo.....

I own an M-590A1, trust it with my Family's lives.

Not that Remmy or others, are bad, but The 590A1, not SP or other almosts, is just more reliable and bulkier, think baseball bat when empty. Besides a Bayonet in the soft glow of a Sure-Fire just does something for me.

No,J, not thin skinned, just unwilling to see or hear half truths and untruths about a cherished and reliable tool.

All too often these conversations devolve into who can leave the highest mark on the fire hydrant, or "Mine is perfect, yours is junk". The huhu over Expresses is a case in point. A small percentage have issues, the vast majority have happy owners and unblemished records.

Also note I say repeatedly that Mossbergs are very good shotguns. No brand bias here.

Now, it's time to get in a couple rounds of wobble with Number Six before work.

Maybe I can entice Mike Irwin up for a rematch.....
