7mm-08Rem ??

Don't forget folks, game's killed by bullets, not cartridges, in the shooting sports. A given bullet size, weight and type fired from any cartridge will perform equally at the same impact velocity and entry parameters.

The only way one can kill an animal with a rifle may well be to grab the rifle by its barrel then swing its butt stock up side the animals head hard enough to way-lay it down dead.

I've got two Vanguard Series 2 rifles, in .308 and .223. I got the .308 first and liked it so much I bought the second one. I really prefer two-stage triggers and the one they have is great. Both of my rifles easily outperform Weatherby's <1 MOA guarantee with my hand loads.

I originally was going to get a 7mm-08, but since I reload, everyone told me to get the .308 instead as there's lots more components to choose from. And there's not much the 7mm will do that the .308 won't.

7mm-08 is a remarkably EFFICIENT lead launcher. You really can't go wrong with it. I have a Model 7 in .308, and my cousin has the same rifle in 7mm-08. I love mine... and his as well. Wonderful rifle, wonderful rounds.

I owned a 7-08 Win. Mdl 70 Classic Featherweight and traded it for somehing, and still own a Rem Mdl 7 Stainless Synthetic in 7-08. I love both the rifle and cartridge. Find a rifle/platform you like, feed it ammo it likes and is designed for the task and keep your knife sharp and your camera handy. I have fed mine Barnes XBT 120 grains and up to 150 grain Rem Cor-lokts things tend to fall with boring consistency.

The only disadvantage I see in the 7x57 Mauser vs the 7MM-08 is the magazine length restricting the length og the 7MM-8 cartridge. I can load a 175 gr. Hornady round nose to about 2500 FPS in two of my rifles and 2450 FPS in the other thanks to Winchester putting a block in the magazne restricting cartridge length. That's the load I go to when looking for hogs or bears. For deer and the like, a 140 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip at 2800 FPS serves the purpose very nicely. I'm thinking a 150 gr. Nosler Accubond or Partition will work very nicely on elk.
I've heard some very interesting things about the 120 gr. Nosler ballistic Tip in the 7MM-08 and 7x57 so may get some and experiment with them.
