7mm-06

Thanks for this post

I missed it in the original post - this is a RH rifle with a LH safety & the stock is cut-out for a RH safety.
  • Interesting rifle
  • Interesting cartridge
  • Interesting safety/set-trigger problem
If you do buy it, I hope you post someday on the final outcome.

Good Luck!

Natman, I doubt it was rechambered from 7x57 to 7mm06. The op said it had a heavy barrel cut to octagonal. The original barrel wouldn't lend itself to that.

Good catch. I reread the original post and the OP did say that it was a custom barrel that was recontoured.

I think I would take it as is and leave the modifications to another. Appears to be excellent work by someone.

My bad, I missed the double set triggers. But the cutout in the stock was apparently for some kind of trigger that had a side safety, like the Timney, though I don't know if that was what had been mounted. A double set trigger on a Mauser 98 can function fine with the original safety, but the OP asked about a different safety than the standard one.

You have a parts gun. The stock is from a Parker-Hale, the triggers look like the ones on Mark X Mausers, the action is a surplus military action poorly sporterized, and the barrel has been recontoured from supposedly a Harry McGowen barrel.

If you want a side safety, you will have to change the trigger. If you want to keep the double triggers, you can opt for a Dayton-Traister Mark II, or you can install a PTG wing safety. Point is, you need a safety that lifts the striker off the sear, like the original Mauser safety.

Your barrel is no big deal to refinish. It will need to be draw filed, polished, and blued. While you are at it, have the action polished and blued at the same time, but choose someone who knows how.

And since the difference between the 7mm-06 and the 280 is minimal, which chambering you choose should be based on whether or not you reload or intend to sell the rifle at some point in the future.

Price

The asking price on the rifle with 40 loaded cartridges is $650.00 as you see it !

I want to shoot it first before I buy it ,or do any work to it !

Time is on my side,as my friend will work with me on paying for the gun,and helping me finish it......I think he would like to see it finished also !

If I have to re-chamber it to a 280 AI,it would almost seem better to just buy a new rifle,BUT you can't buy one that looks as cool as this one .:)

CH4D has dies for around $90.00 which is $60.00 cheaper than MidsouthUSA

Happy New Year Gents !

Harry McGowan

Hi Scorch,I just read your post !

As I kid I remember drooling over the Parker Hales that were sold at my local (get this) JC Pennys store.:rolleyes:I like the stock, the barrel is stamped Harry McGowan on the bottom of the barrel ( Good barrel???) ,as for the safety,I will just use a low mount Mauser type safety or go with a Winchester type 3 position safety !
I like the double set triggers .

TY for your input it's much appreciated !

Seems a little steep to me, being such an obscure chambering, be worth more to me in .280, and completely finished....Id pass, unless I could get it for half that.

I must admit, that is a pretty cool rifle! At the price, bluing, safety & a re-chamber to .280 AI you'd be better off starting from scratch & build custom. But again at that price, if you fix the safety yourself with a RH aftermarket & leave it as a 7mm-06 you could have a neat & unique rifle.

decisions, decisions...

Right around 1980 they rebranded the .280 Rem into the 7 MM Remington Express. They even had some rifles that left the factory with 7mm-06. The whole fiasco eventually ended with them going back to .280 Remington.
Sometimes big green is its own worst enemy.
I can only imagine the collector value of a factory marked 7mm-06.

They made around 200 like that in 1979 before the 7mm Express was renamed to the .280 Remington

Those guns were supposed to have been recalled and replaced, but there are still a few out there

Sold

Gentlemen, I have purchased the gun,for slightly less than was originally asked, with that said,I ordered a Low profile safety ,and installed that in the bolt.I also cleaned up the triggers with lighter fluid, and they work great ! I have found some RCBS dies, but they seem rather high priced, but I may buy them just to have them !
Today I will see about getting the gun blued ...
I hope to be shooting this rifle in the spring !

TY,:D

Eeeha! Congratulations bigbird ! looking forward to a range report ! I had a 280 Remington that just flattened deer and antelope,
and super accurate (4 shots @ 7/8" - 100 yds) with Remington 150grn Core lokt ammo. I know you said 7mm-06, but kinda the same thing.:D

Bluing

I have dropped the rifle off to a gunsmith close to my town,to have him put a High Gloss Bluing on the rifle ! He was impressed with the work that was already done by an unknow gunsmith .....

Once I get the rifle back I'll bed it and install a scope and go shoot it !:D
