$75 and to get my foot in the door

Okay, some of you have been following me.

Recap : I've never shot a handgun. I inherited all of my fathers hand guns. Now Im interested in shooting.

I called a range and I will be going in hopefully on saturday for a lesson. $75 gives you a safety course on handguns (revolvers and semiautos). Includes range time with an instructor and rental gun fees (I do have to buy their ammo in addition to the $75)

I think this will be good enough for now. Seeing as all my friends who shoot live back home (Washington), I know of no one in California who shoots. So to get through this 1st lesson/safety day under my belt, and fire off some rounds will be good enough for me I think.

I will continue to rent guns and shoot them, untill I go home (where my guns are). Then I can take maybe advance courses and shoot with some of my family and friends who are gun enthusiasts.

Anyways cant wait to report back about my experience!

Let me know If you think Im on the right track.

Marty

Sounds Good

Sounds to me like you are on the right track for your situation. You are doing good by being so responsible in your quest for training rather than being self-taught and very possibly doing it wrong. Good luck.

As KMAX said, you're taking the right and responsible course to gun ownership and use. Good luck and welcome to the hobby. I wish more people new to the sport took the same approach.

Marty, you are really on the right track. Initial training in any field is always best done by a professional who you don't know. That way feelings and friendships don't come in to play.

Wise move - good place to start

I sincerely hope the guy showing you how to shoot is as good as the guy that showed me.

I "blasted" a lot of rounds for a good number of years and hit mostly air.

I was fortunate enough to take a class in firearms that was part of the Ohio private police training course in 1983.
The guy giving the class was the firearms instructor for the East Cleveland Police department.

He literally taught me the basics & how to shoot in 15 minutes.
I've done everything exactly the way he taught me ever since.
I give him full credit.
I had the potential, but he's the one that made it possible for me to live up to it.

VERY good idea! I was "self taught" for a number of years and bad habbits that I picked up still haunt me in competition... I no doubt would have saved a ton of money and time by starting with a good instructor.

Same is true for the shotgun games and rifle as well..

You are a very intelligent young man, and are making all the right decisions. Congratulations on your right way of thinking, and welcome to the great world of firearms! We need many more like you.
You may also want to consider a membership in the National rifle Association. They are in the forefront of protecting our second amendment rights. They also sponsor many great shooting programs and events for everyonf from newbies like yourself to seasoned veterans.
(Please, NRA detractors, and complainers, THIS ISN'T THE TIME OR PLACE! PLEASE!!!)

Sounds like you are on the right track. Remember, safety is paramount.
By that I don't mean to sound like a safety nazi. Good habits learned
early will serve you a lifetime. Best wishes.

I must also join in with a, you have made an very well thought out and intelligent choose. Welcome to shooting enjoy and be safe.

I am sure your father would be proud. What a great way to honor his memory by taking a reponsible interest in the firearms he left you.

Good luck!

lots have said it - good job

I hope it goes well. I took the NRA Home Firearm Safety course, and the Basic Pistol course. Money and time well spent.

One of the major lessons was that every range session where everyone goes home with the same number of holes in 'em as they started with is a great session. Anything after that is gravy.

First lesson and first time shooting this Wednesday!

Cant wait! I hope i dont fall in love with this as I already think I have. Gonna take one hell of a toll on my wallet! Stay tuned!

Enjoy... it's a fun hobby. If you're the kind of person who enjoys "precision" sports (golf, bowling, billiards, etc.), then you'll love this!

Sounds a lot like the NRA Basic Handgun course, and IMHO it's a good way to get started on the right foot.

[Disclaimer: I'm an NRA-certified Basic Handgun instructor]
