721 bolt issue

My old 721 is hanging on to the shell on extraction...everything is good and clean and oiled but I am using brass that I have reloaded a few times, the only variable that sticks out at the moment...any ideas

if the shell is being pulled out,but not flipped out of the action the ejector may be sticking due to dirt-bad spring. if its the extractor and you can,t find one, it can be modified to the 700 extractor. eastbank.

If it's extracting but not ejecting, my thought is that something in the ejector series has broken.

Removing/reinstalling the ejector assembly from a 700 series can be something of a pain but it's not rocket science.

My suggestion would be to strip down the bolt and give it a very thorough soaking in solvent to dissolve any crud that might be in the ejector assembly, then flush with brake parts cleaner.

If that doesn't solve the issue, then it would be time to remove the assembly and see if the spring needs replacing.

I THINK that the springs for the current 700 series are universal to all 700 models with plunger ejectors.

Thanks,I stripped the bolt but only as far as removing the pin assembly from the bolt. The ejector button works freely...I guess I should break the spring assembly down and check it out. Where would I be able to buy the spring?

A plunger ejector relies on enough spring pressure to push the case off the bolt face once it clears the receiver ring.

If the spring has gone soft, or has broken, it won't put enough force on the ejector plunger to do its job.

Can you tell is the case trying to move off the bolt face at all, or is it just sitting there?

You can get the spring from Wolff: https://www.gunsprings.com/Rifles &...21, 725 - Long Actions/cID2/mID108/dID212#596

Or from Brownell's: http://www.brownells.com/rifle-part...ngs/700-721-722-ejector-spring-prod42062.aspx

Midway and possibly Graff and Sons would also have them, I would suspect.

Brownell's indicates that the spring is common across a number of 700 series guns, and Wolff shows the part number being the same for the long-action 721 and the short action 722.

One of the problems that plagues 721/722s is the ejector and how it interacts with the extractor. If the extractor has lost its springiness or the edge is worn, the case will just tip out of the bolt face when the bolt is retracted and sit on top of the magazine. If the ejector spring is weak, the case will just barely point out of the ejection port but not release from the extractor.

Modifying the extractor relief groove to accept Remington 700 extractors is a bunch of work in and of itself, but it can de done. Nowadays, I sell customers who are having trouble with their 721/722s the M16 style or Sako-style extractors and machine the bolt for them, it is trouble-free.

thanks again, the case does try to eject and it comes out as if it were going to eject,it just gets hung up in the end of the bolt...I would like to try a new spring and see if that solves my problem...my bolt has the serial number of the rifle etched onto it so I would like to keep them together...

i found something interesting with my bolt. There is a retaining clip that lies between the face of the bolt and the outer edge.I can move it around the inner circumference. There is a raised portion of the clip that was opposite of the ejector so I moved it next to the ejector.I then cycled a few shells and not one failed to eject.
