7.62x39

I am hoping I have the right forum for my question and even if I am off a bit I am sure I will get some answers.
I have a friend with a surplus of 7.62x39 ammo and used to have a sks rifle, too heavy and didnt really like it. What he and I are both wondering, are there any manufacturers of a sporting arm that takes the 7.62x39 or are they just made in military arms? He would like a semi but a bolt would suffice also..

I have a Ruger MkII rifle in 7.62x39. I do not know if it is currently in production. It has the famous, "Boat Paddle", stock and is made of stainless steel, not blued.

CZ makes a 7.62x39 model 527 carbine bolt rifle that is pretty light and easy to carry.

Reports I have read say it is a pretty good shooter.

I have a Model 527 in .223 and it is a tack driver.

A Ruger Mini-30 could be defined as a sporting rifle or a military style rifle. I have one of the newer ones and I am impressed by both function and accuracy. I have had some problems with getting the Chinese surplus ammo to fire 100%. The primers are very hard. Reloads (using CCI 34's) work just fine.

there are a number of modern sport rifles that use 7.62x39. CZ has a bolt action that uses it. I don't know if it's still around but savage made one for a while. Ruger made one for a long time but discontinued them but they are still out there, my brother bought one just last month.

as for semi autos though you are pretty much restricted to SKS, AK47 or AR15 derivatives.

We're all over this but I will add another make and model and that Savage made some bolt rifles in the x39mm cal as well. A bolt rifle chambered in the x39mm ctg is a handy and useful item. Ammo is plentiful (well, was) and the x39 fills a nice slot in the power range. Big enough for whitetails and hogs, not so big it will beat you up and cost a bunch too.

My Ruger bolt so chambered is an ideal starter centerfire, and sees fair use by me as a woods/thicket rifle.

I've been pestering Mossberg to make their MVP Patrol in 7.62x39. It looks like a handy little bolt gun and all accounts say it shoots great, plus it costs less than the CZ.
