7.62x39 AR Upper

I have seen the new 7.62x39 AR uppers (Bushmaster, Olympic and DPMS) at Cabelas. Most of them are sold out. Are there other companies out there that sell these uppers, maybe for a little less than what they sell at the big box store?

I'm looking around the web as I have not seen them locally in my area. The ones I have found are either sold out or cost more than an entire AR. Does anybody have any experience with shooting one? How does it compare to an AK47 as far as accuracy and reliability?
Thanks in advance.

most folks who have a 7.62x39 upper have told me that a 1.5 inch group at 100 is about the best they get. My older brother couldn't get his any tighter than that, but then again, there aren't a whole lot of quality ammunition options for 7.62x39.

I guess if you tuned handloads you could make a tack driver, but I don't know anyone who has done that.

I have a mid length DPMS 7.62x39. It's really accurate and I love it!
Magazines were a problem for a while. Now the Cproducts ones are the hot ticket! :)

I have a Model 1 762X39 upper. I have to agree with the earlier poster on the 1.5" groups at 100 yds. That is with Silver Bear, and other steel case ammo. I would recommend the Model 1 to any of my shooting friends and in fact I know at least one of them has purchased one and is also quite happy with it. I would get an extra bolt as the bolts can break. I keep a spare in my butt stock just in case.

Thanks for the input from everyone so far.

Plateshooter, you said the bolts break. After how many rounds? How are they breaking? I have never seen a broken bolt with any AR. Kind of concerning.

Bolts break either at the locking lugs or at the cam pin area, I've seen both. Cam pin was an Olympic Arms bolt, and locking lugs was with an issue Colt M4.

Normally it happens around 12~16k rounds with 5.56. Don't know if 7.62x39 with the lower pressure ammo would be different.

I have broken a bolt in my 762X39 upper when shooting plates, and have seen it happen to others. Shooting mag after mag as fast as I could accurately. Usually the bottom 2 lugs break off from what I have actually seen and experienced. The gun would still fire, it just started not feeding. Weird eh? I have never broken a bolt after I stopped shooting plate games. Once it happens, I am always concerned. I would guess mine broke around 2500 rounds. I really like my 762X39 upper. These days, I just keep an extra bolt just in case.

I have flirted with a 7.62x39 upper on a few occasions, but was always put off by the mag reliability issue. Last fall I did some research and found stumbled upon AR performance. Up until this spring they made a top notch 7.62x39 upper...but not anymore. They have ceased production since DPMS stopped making new 7.62x39 extractors. If I were the owner of a 7.62x39 upper, I would stock up on a few spare extractors while there is still "old stock" still floating around.

I have a Colt made 16" A2 which shoots as well as I can with a low powered scope on the carry handle. No problem with C-Products mags although I had a couple of plastic unknown maker mags tha tdon't always work 100%. My rifle shoots best with handloads using .309 diameter Remington 125 grain bullets and AA1680 powder. I hope to get some time to try the V-Max 125's I got last winter as I think they might be the real deal for the 7.62x39.

Check out ESSI solutions. They are now making 7.62x39 barrels and the one I have works great. The barrels are under $100. Give them a try. Their customer service is top notch.

I have broken a bolt in my 762X39 upper

I heard that happening on 308 ARs and was not sure about x39. That was my major concern on buying one. Also, the mag don't feed well over 10 rnds. 1.5 MOA is not much better than my SKS. I decided just stay with my SKS.

My Bushmaster 7.62x39 upper seems to work fine. I only have 500 rounds through it. I just plink and might take it hunting, so no speed firing exercises in my history.
Accuracy is acceptable for sitting across a field and making tin cans fly.
I bought it for 400 somewhere online a year ago.

As a side note, I deliberately avoided cleaning it for the first 500 rounds of Wolf military Classic and Novarsk (? the white/black box of Russian steel-cased ammo). The operation was still fine and the upper didn't get that dirty. Ymmv. I don't recommend not cleaning, I just wanted to see what 500 rounds of soot buildup would look like.

It seems as accurate with a 16" barrel as my 20" Russian SKS. Again, can plinking being my method of non-scientific testing.

I like them both for different reasons.

Forgive my ignorance but I have a Mini-30 and SKS and was wondering what is the advantage of a 7.62x39 upper on a AR? And can you just slap one on a AR-15 lower??
