686 or GP-100?

686, GP-100, or other?

Own both with 4" barrels. I consider my 686 a back-up to my GP-100. I always prefer to shoot my GP over my 686. I'm noticing that many people here saying that they own both are picking the GP. I saw I think two people that own both say the 686. Are there any other 686 and GP-100 (past and/or present) owners picking the 686 that I missed?

Of the two, I own a GP100 that was a gift. I had just bought a 686 a few weeks prior to receiving it and decided to sell the 686 because I didn't want to have that moeny tied up in another 4" .357 when I am trying to introduce some variety to my collection.

I kept the Ruger due to the sentimental value that it holds (my mother gave it to me), but when I was spending my money, it was the 686 due to a better trigger and an overall more refined look. The durability of the Ruger is great, but I don't see my self shooting a SW enough to wear it out.

You know you've had too many guns when there's some you can't remember all the details of...

I had a 4" blued GP-100 that I remember taking home from work, but I can't remember if I ever made it officially mine. Never warmed up to it. I guess I brought it back or traded it in, or something. Obviously it made a big impression on me... ;)

686 vs gp 100

I have both.....including 6 and 7 shot versions of the 686. The biggest difference between them is the action. Because the Ruger uses a coil hammer spring it can never be as smooth as the Smith. Coil springs always have a stacking effect as the trigger pull is started. You can slick the Ruger up quite a bit and make the trigger pull appreciably smoother and lighter, but it is maybe 75-80% of a Smiths. That said the 3 in GP is a great gun with a super factory grip. If I was going to pick one it would be the 686. If I could get 2 it would be the 4 in 686 and the 3 in GP. As far as the 7 shot....the drawback to me is that Safariland does not make a 7 shot loader...only HKS does. I prefer and am used to the Safariland. If you get the 6 shot version the speedloader is the same for the 686 and the GP.
